This Week in Athletics: September 2

Greetings #TARnation!

I hope you are all settling in to the groove of classes and navigating the CC. We had a great first week of action, let's get you caught up!

-Men's soccer opened the year as the #2 team in the country, and currently stands at 2-0-1 after playing three games in six days to open the year. They started with a wet and wild affair against Lenoir-Rhyne, earning a 6-5 victory on Thursday. That was followed by a 2-1 win against Emory & Henry on Saturday, and then a 2-2 draw versus Flagler on Tuesday. Pablo Herrero scored four goals in the Lenoir-Ryne game, becoming just the 5th players in program history to score at least four times. In addition, Jaden Splunge had three assists in the game, making him just one of twelve players to accomplish THAT feat. Herrero was named SSC Player of the Week, while Splunge was named SSC Defensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile, junior Finlay Prain has scored a goal in all three games so far, including the equalizer with just three minutes left in the Flagler game. 

-Women's soccer opened the year with a pair of road wins in Colorado. Last Thursday, they played at #12 Colorado School of Mines, and were led to victory by freshman Gracue DiStefano, who scored twice in her NCAA debut. They followed that with a 2-0 win over Regis University on Saturday. Keeper Lauren Mehos has ten saves in two games, and is stopping 91% of shots coming her way so far. This is the third consecutive year that head coach Alicia Schuck's gals have started the year 2-0 or better. 

-Volleyball hosted four other schools at the Rollins Invitational last weekend. The Tars posted a 3-1 record with wins over Ursuline (3-0), Concord (3-0), and Southern Connecitcut (3-1). Unfortunately, they dropped their fourth match in a five-set thriller against St, Mary's (TX). Kayla Goodloe, Robinson Repass, and Cameron Grange each earned spots on the All-Tournament team. Goodloe leads the Tars with 44 kills, while Grange is right behind her with 43 kills and eight aces. Repass was a brick wall at the net, earning 15 blocks while adding 30 kills of her own. 


-Women's soccer will make their home debut at The 'Spur on Thursday when they host Tusculum (0-1) at 7pm. They will then host the #11 Ashland Eagles (1-0-1) on Saturday, also at 7pm. Nothing like some footy under the lights!   

-Volleyball is headed to Arcata, California for the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic, hosted by Dominican University of California. They will look to stay on the winning side of the standings with four matches in two days starting on Friday.
