Charleston, S.C. – Rollins competed at the SAISA Singlehanded Championships hosted by the College of Charleston today. The event was a conference championship regatta, racing lasers in a singlehanded scoring format.
A fleet of six sailed on the women's side of the championships. A fresh northerly wind at 12-18 knots with sunny skies met the 10 a.m. start for the sailors. The conditions held steady, and the fleet completed six races before wrapping up at 12:30 p.m.
Annie Samis of Rollins had an impressive performance, sailing consistently well, posting 15 points overall to finish runner-up. Her day saw a top-three finish in each race, including one first-place score in the second race of the day.
Following the women, the open division took to the course. The 13-boat fleet got underway at 2:30 p.m., completing the first four races of the scheduled 10-race series. Race five began, but a significant right shift on the first beat forced an abandonment. With the fleet needing to clear the James Island Yacht Club grounds by 5 p.m. for a scheduled event, there wasn't enough time to reset the course, so racing concluded at 4:15 p.m. for the day.
Despite this,
Caleb Kinnear for the Tars had started off well, holding three top-five finishes, his best being second in the day's first race.
Matthew Sexton also competed in the event, posting two top tens in the races.
The event is scheduled to continue tomorrow, September 14.
Tampa, Fla. – The Tars also competed in the SAISA Top 6 Invitational hosted by South Florida. The event was a fundamental regatta, sailing FJs and using a combined scoring format. A steady north-northeast breeze at 9–12 knots opened the day, paired with sunny skies and temperatures in the high 80s. The outgoing tide helped keep conditions manageable, flattening the waves and limiting general recalls. The fleet got through six races before heading to shore for a midday break. Racing picked back up at 2 p.m., though the wind shifted east and fell to just 4–5 knots. Three more races were completed in the light air, wrapping up the regatta with nine total races by 4 p.m. Each race was a W4, averaging 16–19 minutes on the water.
Rollins finished fifth overall, posting 346 total points via 119 in the A division, 112 in the B division, and 115 in the C division. The Tars saw nine top ten finishes on the day, the best finish highlighted by a fourth place in race seven out of the B division in
Milo Fleming (skipper) and
Alexander Goldsmith (crew). Three of those top ten finishes came in the C division via
Adelaide Matzky (skipper) and
Cameron Kinnear (crew). Rounding out the roster on the water in the A division was skipper
Jack Adderley and crew
Soleil Aurignac.
The Tars will continue action on the water tomorrow, September 14, for the USF Trophy in Tampa.
