PALM DESERT, Calif. (March 14, 2025) - Women's golf ran the table at the two-round Augustana Spring Fling, winning the seven-team event by eight strokes on Friday. The Tars shot +18 on both days at Desert Willow Golf Resort, and featured five of the top six individuals on the leaderboard.
Thursday's opening round saw Rollins put together the top team effort with
Megan Docherty,
Sophia Fondenaer,
Sarah Knitter, and
Carla Alvarez combining for a 306. Docherty fired a 74 (+2) that featured five birdies. Fondenaer was only one shot behind her at 75, while Knitter added a 76. Alvarez wrapped up the scoring with an 81. Rollins was twelve shots better than second-place Saint Leo, and 20 or more shots better than every other team.
Friday saw the a far different result on the team side. Alvarez carded three birdies and eleven pars for a 73 to lead the day two squad. Knitter matched her three birdies and was one shot behind at 74. Docherty didn't have her best stuff, but still managed a 77, and freshman
Alisha Rametra rounded out team play with an 82. The Tars matched their 306 from day one. Saint Leo won the day with a 304, but it was not nearly enough to overtake the Tars, who won their first event of the spring.
Knitter finished second on the individual board with a +6, Docherty took third with a +7, and Alvarez was tied for fourth with her +10.
Elizabeth Kondal (76, 78) and
Lena Durette (78, 76) competed in the event as independents, and both joined Alvarez with a +10.
From assistant coach Dev Naik:
"A trip to Cali plus a win is a good experience for the team. We have been getting closer and closer lately, and just as we keep the faith in our effort the team has proven it pays off. It was great to see so many of our players at the top of the leaderboard and in the chase embracing being in contention. Despite not playing as well as we know we can, we still claimed the top spot on the leaderboard which gives us good momentum for the rest of the season. Going into post season, we as a team know what we need to continue work on as we keep moving up. One of the biggest takeaways that encapsulates our achievement: the more we build ourselves and each other, the more we can succeed together. We are proud to see our efforts come alive."
The Tars will take some time off from competition before heading to Boca Raton to play in the Lynn Invitational at the end of March.
