Tars Take Eighth at Edisto Island

Senior Megan Docherty led the way with a ninth-place finish

CHARLESTON, S.C. (October 15, 2024) - Women's golf wrapped up their fifth day in a row of competition with an eighth-place finish at the Edisto Island Invitational, hosted by College of Charleston, on Tuesday.

For the third time this fall, the Tars were the only Division-II team in a field of fifteen Division-I opponents. Rollins shook off a rocky first round with a phenomenal effort in the second, and a strong finish in the third to finish at 900 and in the top half of the field. The host Cougars claimed the trophy at 863, edging out Northern Arizona (867).

Megan Docherty continued her recent strong play in the opening round on Monday morning, using four birdies to finish at 73 (+2). She was matched in round one by Carla Alvarez who used three birdies and ten pars to help the Tars. Violet Robbins (78, +7) and Sarah Knitter (81, +10) rounded out the scoring, giving Rollins a 305.

After a quick lunch break, the girls were back out on the course in the afternoon, and played a terrific round as a team. Alvarez was the star, shooting under par for the first time this fall. She carded two birdies, a bogey, and fifteen pars to score a 70 and vault herself into the top-five on the individual board. Elizabeth Kondal was a new player in the afternoon, improving her round one score by fourteen strokes to finish at 73. Docherty posted a 74 and Robbins a 77 to give the Tars a 294.

They entered the final round on Wednesday sitting in ninth. Docherty came out hot, birdying three of her first five holes. She would post a 35 (-1) on the back nine, and a 37 (+2) on the front to finish at 72. Robbins and Knitter each came through with scores of 74, while Alvarez and Kondal each ended with an 81. Rollins posted a 301 in the final round, finishing with a 900 for the event. This placed them in eighth overall.

Docherty's 219 (+6) put her in a tie for ninth, her second top-ten finish in three events this fall.

The Tars are scheduled to play in the Saint Leo Invitational next week. First round action tees off on the morning of Monday, October 21 from Lake Jovita South.
