Tars Beat Wolves on Boyd Chip Shot

Rollins defeated West Georgia 1-0 on Friday afternoon

Box Score DAYTONA, Fla. (September 2, 2022) - It was another hard-fought, low scoring affair for the Rollins women's soccer team, but they once again prevailed, earning their third win in a row by defeating West Georgia 1-0 on Friday afternoon. The Tars now sit at 3-0-1 on the year, while the Wolves fall to 1-1-0.

The theme of the young season has been defense, and the Tars yet again played to the script on Friday. Their swarming midfield limited the amount of chances for West Georgia, while the backfield play once again shot down almost any shot opportunities. For the game, Rollins allowed only seven shots, with three on goal, all of which were saved by Elena Beasley. Unfortunately for the offense, they were not able to do much in the first half, and the two teams went to the locker room locked in at nil apiece.

A costly error early in the second half cost West Georgia a goal, and ultimately the game. Off of a goalie kick, the Tars were able to send the ball back into the Wolves zone. A lazy pass from a defender to the goalie was intercepted by Gabby Boyd, who ended up on the far right side, about 20 feet from the goal. Trying to create a chance for any cutting teammates, she chipped the ball to the center of the net. It bounced off a UWG defender who failed to clear it, and ended it up in the net for the only goal of the game. It was the first career collegiate goal for the freshman.

Boyd ended the day with four total shots, and three on goal. Sarah Skala had three shots of her own (one on goal), while Kayla Park was the only other player with multiple chances at two shots. Beasley had her aforementioned three saves, and was credited with her third shutout of the season.

It will be a short rest for the ladies before they are back in action. Their next game will be at home on Sunday, September 4 at 11:00 am when they host the #15 ranked Columbus State Cougars at Cahall-Sandspur Field.
