Tars Take Fifth at SSC Championships

Lynn held off the charging Tars in the fourth place battle

CLEARWATER, Fla. (February 20, 2022) – The Tars tallied a fifth place finish, as they close out the Sunshine State Conference Championships at the Long Center.
 
The morning swims saw a number of Tars qualify for the last day of finals.  Anna Van Zyverden earned an A-Final spot in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a NCAA B-Cut time of 52.00 seconds.  Beatriz Olivieri earned another night swim with a B-Final spot in the event.  Leora Rose and Morgan Reilly each registered B-Final times in the 200 Yard Backstroke.  Abigayle Wood and Maia Russell earned B-Final spots with their swims in the 200 Yard Breaststroke prelims.
 
Jill Hughes registered an NCAA B-Cut time in the 1650 Yard Freestyle night swim, capping her event by stopping the clock in sixth place with a time of 17.17.46 in the distance event.  Alana Goodwin and Abby Frey also earned points for Rollins finishing 15th and 16th in the event.
 
Van Zyverden finished seventh in the 100 Yard Freestyle A-Final for the Tars, while Olivieri captured second in the B-Final, 10th overall.
 
Reilly, in 11th, set a new school record with a time of 2:03.89 in the 200 Yard backstroke.  Rose, in 14th, also tallied points for the Tars in the swim.
 
Wood stopped the clock first in the 200 Yard Breaststroke B-Final, tallying a new school record with a time of 2:20.77.  Mackenzie Adams, who replaced Russell in the B-Final, registered a 15th place finish.
 
The Tars finished fifth in both 400 Yard Freestyle Relay swims.  The top team of Van Zyverden, Erika Wesch, Alonna Clark, and Olivieri stopped the time in 3:30.12.  Amelia Kondal, Reilly, Hughes, and Sydney Willis registered a 3:36.57 in the swim.
 
Nova Southeastern clinched the overall title.  Tampa captured the silver, with Florida Southern rounding out the podium.  Lynn held off the charging Tars in fourth place, finishing the event with 346 points against the fifth palce Tars' 341.  Saint Leo and Florida Tech occupy the bottom two spots.

The Tars will await their NCAA Championship fates.  The NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship competitors will be announced on Wednesday, February 23.
