CLEARWATER, Fla. (February 16, 2022) – A pair of school records fell on Wednesday at the first day of the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships.
Chance Ricca broke the school record in the 200 Yard Freestyle which helped lead the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay team to smash the school record by 13 seconds.
Ricca led off with a 1:38.66 which broke the 12-year-old school record for the 200 Freestyle, and was fast enough to qualify as an NCAA "B" qualifying standard. Ricca's opening leg helped propel his team, along with
Cameron Dolly,
Christian Huber, and
Harold Lockhart, to finish the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay in a fourth-place time of 6:35.38, shattering the previous school record in the event. Their finish also earned them the NCAA provisional standard, which places them in a position to potentially become the first relay team in school history to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships.
Also swimming the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay was the quartet of
Asa Marvel,
Daniel Liew,
Connor Xu,
Payden Knettles. They placed 13th in a time of 6:56.73.
After the opening day of swimming, the Tars sit in fourth place overall with 38 points, ahead of Florida Tech (34 points), Saint Leo (32), and Lynn (32). Nova Southeastern and Tampa are tied for first with 52 points, with Florida Southern in third with 42 points.
