"This was a great event at a beautiful golf course," remarked head coach
Julie Garner. "The grass on the greens is unlike anything we play all year, so it was a good test, along with the swirling winds. Unfortunately we made too many big numbers and missed too many putts to post a decent team score."
Rollins found themselves in an early hole after day one on Sunday, shooting a team total of 316 (+32).
Katharina Hesse and
Carla Alvarez Perez were the only two to break 80, with each athlete shooting a 78.
Olivia Tamburlini and Berni Villalba each chipped in with a score of 80, while
Elizabeth Kondal carded an 82.
After shaking off the first round jitters, the Tars improved their score by ten strokes on Monday, finishing with a 306. Four of the five golfers improved their score, with Hesse leading the way with a 73 (+2). She shot par on ten holes, and birded three others. Villalba and Kondal each turned in cards of 77, while Tamburlini and Perez finished with identical 79s.
The final round on Tuesday saw a phenomenal effort from Tamburlini and Hesse. Tamburlini finished the day with a nice two-under 69 that featured four birdies, two bogeys, and a whopping twelve pars. Hesse was only one shot behind her with a 70, including five birdies on the back nine. Perez also had her top round of the weekend with a 77, followed by an 81 from Villalba and an 87 from Kondal.
"I was happy to see the team start the final round strong, but big numbers and three-putts erased an early advantage," added Garner. "There were some bright spots in the round, which is always nice to see. But there is more work to be done!"
Hesse's final tally of 221 (+8) earned her a Top-20 finish.
"I was very pleased to see Kat and Oli finish under-par today," said Garner. "It's a shame we couldn't translate that into a better team score. Now, we need to rest, recover, and prepare for next week's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill. We will take what we learned thus far and apply it to solid play in North Carolina next week."
