PENSACOLA, Fla. (February 9, 2014) - Rollins
gave up early runs in Sunday's series finale against No. 4 West
Florida and was unable to make up the deficit as they fell 8-6 to
the Argos at Jim Spooner Field.
Philip
Burket (0-1) gave up five run on four hits, including a pair of
home runs to get tagged with the loss.
Freshman Mike
Gaughan made his collegiate debut and went 3.2 innings,
allowing three runs on five hits, to go with three strikeouts. Benny
Ely finished the game for Rollins and tossed 2.2 innings and
scattered one hit and did not allow a run.
Offensively, Hunter
Mayfield led the team with a 3-for-5 performance with two runs
and a RBI. Zach
Persky and Yuta
Okazaki each registered two hits, while Persky drove in two
runs and Okazaki one.
Rollins (3-3) struggled thru the first three innings as they
combined for three hits and scored their first run in the second.
Mayfield recorded the Tars' first run of the game and crossed the
plate from third on a Michael
Dolan RBI single.
West Florida quickly jumped on the board after their loss the
night before and plated five runs in the first two frames.
The Tars were able to come within one run in the fourth as they
scored three runs. After a groundout by Matt
Hendricks, Mayfield and Bryan
Perlmutter recorded back-to-back hits, while a walk by Dolan
loaded the bases. A fielding error by the Argos' third baseman
kept the inning alive and allowed Mayfield to score his second run
of the day. A single to right by Persky drove in Dolan and
Perlmutter to make the score 5-4.
In the home half of the fourth, UWF (5-2) plated a run to extend
their lead to 6-4 and would score their final two runs in the
bottom sixth.
Rollins was able to score once in the seventh and once again in
the eighth to come within two, but went 3-up, 3-down in the ninth
to end the game.
The Tars out-hit the Argos 12-10 and were error-free on the
field. Argos starter Jordan DeLorenzo picked up the win in 6.2
innings of work. He struck out five batters and allowed five runs
on nine hits. Alex Stevens earned his third save of the year in
2.1 innings on the mound.
Rollins will return to the friendly confines of Alfond Stadium
on Feb. 15 as they host the Bentley Falcons in a 1 p.m.
matinee.
