WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 21, 2014) - Rollins
opened Sunshine State Conference action at Alfond Stadium against
the Lynn Fighting Knights and ultimately dropped a 3-2 decision
Friday night.
Isaiah
Sakany (0-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season in
5.0 innings on the bump. The right-hander registered a career-best
five strikeouts, despite allowing all three LU runs.
Sophomore Matt
Hendricks had the hot bat for the Tars (3-5, 0-1 SSC) as he
notched three of the Tars' six team hits. He also had one stolen
base.
Zach
Persky, Hunter
Mayfield and Bryan
Perlmutter recorded the remaining team hits. Persky also
scored the Tars' first run of the game.
Lynn (1-0 SSC), who improves to 9-3 on the season, was fairly
quick to jump on the board. The Fighting Knights scored in the
opening frame on a RBI single by Sal Giardina, plating Thomas
Kain.
The Tars answered back in the home half as Persky crossed the
plate on a two-out single by Matt
Hendricks. LU would score once again in the top second and
would hold a lead until the bottom third.
Peter
Nicoletto evened the score in the third after reaching base on
a leadoff walk. The freshman made his way around the bases on a
steal, passed ball and scored on a Yuta
Okazaki sacrifice bunt.
The Fighting Knights took the go-ahead lead in the fifth on a
leadoff solo home run by Kain. The third baseman led LU with a
3-for-5 performance, to go with two runs, two RBI and solo home
run.
Lynn outhit the Tars 9-6 and kept Rollins scoreless over six
innings.
Jed Vandernaald (4-0) earned the win in 6.2 innings of work.
The right-handed pitcher scattered five hits and allowed two runs,
one earned, and struck out four.
Rollins will complete the three-game series against Lynn on
Saturday, Feb. 22 with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Fans
