WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 1, 2014) - Southpaw Jack
Murray worked seven innings and allowed only one earned run to
help snap the Tars' five-game losing skid on a 7-4 victory over the
College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon.
The Tars (4-7) kicked off the 66th Annual Rollins
College Baseball Week tournament with the Golden Knights and on a
good note. Murray (1-1) matched a career-best six strikeouts in
the win, while only allowing a pair of walks.
Freshman Benny
Ely picked up his first save of the year in 2.0 innings on the
bump. The right-hander scattered two hits and recorded one
strikeout.
At the plate, the Tars were led by second baseman Christian
Coburn with two hits, two runs and a career-high three stolen
bases. The middle of the order for Rollins registered the
remainder of the Tars' six total team hits.
Saint Rose (0-8) held an early lead in their second game of the
day as they managed to plate three runs in the top second. The
Golden Knights then tacked on another run in the fourth to lead
Rollins 4-1.
The Tars slowly closed in on the deficit in the bottom fifth.
Phillip Zdanowski found himself in a jam as five straight walks
loaded the bases and drove in two Tars runs, 4-3.
In the bottom sixth, Rollins utilized a Saint Rose two-base
error to drive in Peter
Nicoletto and Evan
Rivera to take a 5-4 lead. Lucas
Valelly then laced a ball through the right side that drove in
the Tars' final two runs of the game.
The Golden Knights were held scoreless through the final six
innings, despite outhitting Rollins 7-6.
Saddled with the loss for Saint Rose was Connor Ramon (0-1) in
0.2 innings. He faced eight batters and allowed four runs on two
hits and two walks.
Up next for the Tars is a Sunday matinee with Concordia-NY at
