ORLANDO, Fla. (April 15, 2025) - The men's golf team finished fourth at the SSC Championship, but the stole the show thanks to freshman
Mick Herron capturing the individual championship. The Minnesota native shot under par in all three rounds to finish -7 for the event, three shots better than his closer competitor.
Sunday morning's first round saw Herron tee off from the fifth position for the Tars, but he carded the top score of the day with a 69 (-3). His only blemish came on nine, where he bogeyed the par four. He countered that with four birdies and thirteen pars to hold the overall lead.
Andrew Clark was even par at 72,
Sean Dobson posted a 74 (+2), and Clarence Chapman played to a 76 (+4) to round out the scoring.
On Monday's second round, Herron had four birdies and three bogeys to finish at one under. Clark shook off a double bogey one one to comeback with a respectable 74. Chapman also added a 74, and Dobson headed in to the clubhouse with a 75 to give Rollins a 294, placing them in third overall.
The weather was perfect at Rio Pinar Golf Club on Tuesday for the final round of action. Herron struggled out of the gate with two bogeys in the first four holes, but soon found his groove. The Minnesota native went bogey-free for the remainder of the round, and added birdies on seven, nine, sixteen, and seventeen to finish with a 69. His most impressive hole was eighteen, where he chipped in from about six feet off the fringe to save par and lock in the title.
As a team, Rollins finished fourth overall. Florida Southern ran away with the trophy, winning by 13 strokes. Embry-Riddle and Barry tied for second, just two shots ahead of the Tars at +10.
Herron is the first Tar to win the individual SSC championship since Dan Walters in 2006.
With the fourth-place finish, the Tars have locked in a berth to the NCAA South/Southeast Regional which will take place at Mission Inn Resort May 7-10. The event is hosted by Greater Orlando Sports Commission and Rollins College.
