Forrer Competes at the U.S. Sailing Team Racing Championship

The Tars' head coach finished ninth at the prestigious event in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (August 19, 2024) - Rollins Sailing Head Coach Esteban Forrer took part in the 2024 U.S. Sailing Team Racing Championship over the weekend in Annapolis, Maryland. His team, OneUnited, finished ninth overall, ending the event in a five-way tie for fifth place, losing the tiebreaker as the lone 10-win team not to advance to the quarterfinals.

Forrer's team was comprised of six individuals who have either recently graduated or are current collegiate sailors, including Alfonso Garcia Bringas (Jacksonville University '21), Telmo Basterra (Jacksonville University '21), Grace Benzal (Jacksonville University '21), Kate Shermock (St. Mary's College of Maryland '24), and Emily Shioutakon (St. Mary's College of Maryland '26). The team got off to a slow start, dropping the first two races before getting in the win column with a 1-2-4 finish against Whishbone in race three. As the rotation neared its conclusion, OneUnited was poised to make a move into the quarterfinals. The team sealed a commanding 1-2-3 victory over ACs Rats, a group of College of Charleston alumni, in what was scheduled to be the penultimate race prior to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, the fickle winds of the Chesapeake Bay did not allow for time to complete the final race of stage one, leaving OneUnited with 10 wins in 17 tries, and with the tiebreaker going against them, the team finished in ninth place overall.
