Women's Golf Opens Spring with Runner-Up Finish

Rollins finished 2nd of 17 teams at Flagler Tournament

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (February 6, 2024) - Women's golf opened their spring season by overcoming a tough start to finish second at the World Golf Hall of Fame Invitational hosted by Flagler College.

Lynn took home the trophy with three rounds under 300 to finish at 884 (+20). The Tars went 304-293-297=894 for second, just one shot ahead of third-place Nova Southeastern (895). Other SSC schools in the competition included Saint Leo (5th), Tampa (8th), Florida Southern (9th), Barry (10th), Embry-Riddle (12th), and Palm Beach Atlantic (14th).

Battling through suboptimal weather on Monday, the Tars carded a 304 in the first round, putting them in a tie for 12th. Bernie Villalba and Carla Alvarez each shot a 75 to pace Rollins.

After a quick break, they hit the course for a second time, and showed vast improvement. Once again, Villalba found herself with the top score on the team this time matching Elizabeth Kondal's 71. The team improved eleven shots on their first go-round, putting up a 293.

Tuesday brought sunny, bright blue skies and a Tars team ready to throw darts. Kondal led the pack with another 71, and no golfer shot worse than 76 on the day. Villalba handed in a 76, finishing with a 222, good for a seventh-place tie.

Kondal ended her tournament 76-71-71=218, finishing just one shot back of Nova Southeastern's Maia Samuelsson. Kondal would finish the event with ten birdies and 32 pars.

"We are happy with our runner-up finish this week against such a strong tournament field," remarked head coach Julie Garner. "I am especially proud of the team for bouncing back so well after a lackluster eighteen to start. Shooting the low team total for both the second and third rounds was very satisfying. Also very happy for Elizabeth (Kondal) to finish in second at her "home" tournament in St. Augustine. We have a lot fo work to do, but this was a solid start."

Next up for Rollins is the Lady Moc Classic, hosted by Florida Southern. Teams will tee off on Monday, February 19 from Grasslands Country Club.
