SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (July 12, 2023) - Recent Rollins grad
Spencer Sarringar struck a deal with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the American Association of Professional Baseball last week, joining the independent baseball club following a wildly successful spring with the Tars.
Sarringar attended Northern State before joining Rollins prior to the 2023 season. He made a massive impact in his lone year in the blue and gold, hitting .386 in 39 games. He scored 35 runs, smacked ten doubles, launched three home runs, drove in 27. posted an on-base percentage of .474 and a slugging percentage of .530. He also showcased decent wheels for a catcher, stealing seven bases in eight attempts.
Sarringar came through in a big way during the Tars run to the National Championship. The 6'2 backstop had at least one hit in all ten NCAA playoff games, including six multi-hit efforts. He scored 14 runs and drove in 12 when it mattered most.
Perhaps his most impressive statistic came from the defensive side of the plate. Using his rifle of an arm, Sarringar was able to throw out 17 of the 31 players who attempted to steal a base against him, an unbelievable 55% caught-stealing rate.
He has seen action in three games for the Canaries so far, making his debut on July 4th. He collected his first career hit and RBI on July 8th against the Chicago Dogs. Sarringar is the first former Tar position player to land a professional baseball contract since catcher Chris Corbett was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2017. In addition, the Tars have had several pitchers play professionally including Brad Case in the 2018 MLB draft, Garrett Leonard, Jimmy Robbins, Cameron Enck and Whit Drennan who were all selected in the 2019 MLB draft, and Brian Auerbach, Anthony Trovato, and
Justin Alintoff, who all signed with independent league teams.
