SAINT LEO, Fla. (May 21, 2022) – The 20th-ranked Rollins baseball team trounced Lee by a score of 15-1 on Saturday to earn a trip to the South Region 2 championship tomorrow. The win pushes the Tars to 37-15 on the season, while the Flames drop to 32-23.
Parker Smith went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs, while
Cameron Meehan was 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs.
Adams Torres finished 1-for-4 with a walk and a three-run home run and
Nick Santucci was 2-for-6 with three runs scored.
Justin Alintof (6-5) tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits while walking one and striking out two.
Brandon Daniels went 1-for-3 with a home run for the Flames. Miguel Alba (5-3) took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings, walking three and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
- Santucci opened the second inning with an infield single and took second on a wild pitch.
- Smith then singled, moving Santucci to third to put runners on the corners with nobody out.
- Ryan Coleman then drove in Santucci with a fielder's choice to open the scoring.
- Two batters later, Jared Herron delivered a two-out RBI double to score Coleman, making it 2-0 Tars.
Fourth Inning
- Smith opened the fourth with a solo home run, foreshadowing a big inning for the Tars.
- After Coleman was hit by a pitch, Meehan launched a two-run shot to make it 5-0 Tars.
- Four batters later, Torres hit the third home run of the inning, a three-run shot to left to make it 8-0.
- Three batters after that, Smith, batting for the second time in the inning, doubled home Jeslyn Whitehead.
- Coleman then knocked in Santucci with a groundout for the second time in the game for the eighth run of the inning, increasing the lead to 10-0.
Fifth Inning
- Daniels hit a leadoff home run for the Flames to get Lee on the board, making it a 10-1 game.
Seventh Inning
- Joey Rubin brought home Meehan with a fielder's choice and Chase Achuff drove home Herron with a sacrifice fly, pushing the margin to 12-1.
Eighth Inning
- Smith and Meehan each collected RBI singles and Sam Tanous drove in Aidan Healy with a sacrifice fly to make it a 15-1 game in the eighth.
Ninth Inning
- Alintoff finished off the complete game with a double play and a ground out in the ninth, closing out the 15-1 win.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will face the winner of the Saint Leo-Lee game, which is scheduled to finish later tonight. The championship is tentatively set for 11 a.m. tomorrow, with a second game to be played approximately an hour after the first, only if necessary.
