Tars Finish Conference Championship as Runners-Up

Carla Alvarez Perez took third, while Bernardita Villalba finished in a tie for fourth, as both Tars earned All-Tournament Team honors

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (April 12, 2022) – The Tars were again among the low scores, as they hold on to runner-up position in the 2022 Sunshine State Conference Championships at Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club.  Carla Alvarez Perez took third, while Bernardita Villalba finished in a tie for fourth, as both Tars earned All-Tournament Team honors.  Every Tar in the competition finished among the top 20 golfers individually.

The Tars tied for the lowest round of the day, carding a 12 over, 296, to complete their 54 holes.  Rollins adds the score to opening round totals of 303 and 290 for a total of 889, 37 over par.
 
Barry held on for the title, shooting a 14 over par in the third round, to edge the Tars by two strokes.  The Tars closed the gap to first with their final round effort, but could not catch the Bucs, finishing second, their best result since Rollins won the title in 2016.  The Tars fought off third place Lynn and fourth place Nova Southeastern, who both also registered a score of 12 over par on the day.  Embry-Riddle shot a 16 over par final round, to finish in fifth.

Carla Alvarez Perez added a 76 to rounds of 74 and 71, as she secured a third place individual result.  Bernardita Villalba shot the Tars low round of the day, climbing four spots, to earn a top five finish.  The sophomore used an even par front nine to climb the leaderboard.  Elizabeth Kondal recovered from a shaky start, shooting a one under par on the back nine, and three over par overall, to earn a 54 hole score of 225, 12 over par.  The freshman finished tied for eighth, as a trio of Tars earned top ten results.  Katharina Hesse shot a three over, 74, over the final 18 holes, to rise eight spots, tallying a tie for 13th.  Olivia Tamburlini rounded out the Tars lineup, shooting a 75 to earn a tie for 17th.
 
Alice Gotbring, of Barry, earned individual medalist honors, shooting a one under final round to take the five stroke victory.  Sara Ericsson of Lynn held on for runner up.  Carla Alvarez Perez took third, finishing one stroke ahead of Bernardita Villalba, Amelia Millie Lawson, of Embry-Riddle, and Eve Marie Sapin, of Barry.

Rollins awaits their NCAA Tournament fate.  The Regional Championships are set for May 2-4 at Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie, Florida.
