WALTHAM, Mass. (April 24, 2014) - The Rollins
baseball team picked up their second straight win as they defeated
the Bridgeport Purple Knights 9-5 Thursday on the campus of Bentley
University.
Rollins faced the Purple Knights in their first game of their
annual trek to the Northeast. The Tars will face Bentley on Friday
and Assumption College on Sunday.
After picking up their second conference win of the year last
Saturday, Rollins was off to a quick start against Bridgeport as
they utilized a pair of errors by the Purple Knights to score four
runs.
Christian
Coburn led off the frame with a walk and then put himself in
scoring position as he stole second. A base hit to right by Peter
Nicoletto scored Coburn. Nicoletto then in turn scored after
stealing second and reaching third on Bridgeport's first error of
the frame. The freshman then scored on Philip
Burket's single up the middle.
Hunter
Mayfield scored the third run of the inning after reaching on a
walk, moving to second on a Christopher
Corbett single, and scoring on a Cam
Brown RBI single. Corbett scored the final run of the frame on
a Yuta
Okazaki sacrifice fly.
The Tars extended their lead in the following inning as they
plated three runs. With the Tars batting around in the first
inning, Coburn led the frame as he reached on his second walk of
the game.
This time around it took Coburn a little longer to score.
Bridgeport loaded the bases after giving up back-to-back base hits
to Nicoletto and Burket. Mayfield, who reached base on a
hit-by-pitch, drove in Coburn to push the Tars' lead to 5-1.
Nicoletto scored his second run of the game on a Corbett RBI
single. Burket then came around to score on Cam
Brown's second hit of the day.
Rollins tacked on another run in the fourth before Bridgeport
scored two in the seventh to cut the Tars' lead to 8-3.
Tars starter Matt
Hendricks kept the Purple Knights off the board through four
straight innings and earned the win in 7.1 innings of action.
Hendricks allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out
four.
Rollins scored their final run of the game in the eighth as
Coburn matched a career-best three runs.
Bridgeport scored two more in the ninth for a 9-5 final.
Nicoletto led the team with three hits, while Burket, Corbett
and Brown each registered two. Nicoletto and Burket also plated
two runs.
Ray Kreiger was charged with the loss in 0.1 inning. He allowed
four runs on four hits and two walks.
Rollins will next face Bentley on Friday, April 25 at 3 p.m.
