WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 4, 2014) - The Rollins
baseball team used a 4-run sixth to roll past the Saint Anselm
Hawks Tuesday night as part of the 66th Annual Rollins
College Baseball Week tournament.
Rollins (7-7) trailed early in the contest as the Hawks jumped
on the board in the top second with two runs. The Tars were able
to take back a run in the bottom third on a Christopher
Corbett RBI single, plating Hunter
Mayfield.
In the top fifth, Saint Anselm pushed their lead to 3-1, but
would find themselves in a jam in the sixth.
Rollins was one batter shy of batting around as they scored four
consecutive runs. Back-to-back base knocks and a hit-by-pitch
loaded the bases for the Tars. A Mayfield walk would drive in a
run to come within one, 3-2.
Back-to-back wild pitches from the Hawks' Christopher Bunero
would plate another two runs for the Tars for a 4-3 lead. The
final run of the frame came on a sacrifice fly by Bryan
Perlmutter, scoring Mayfield for the second time.
The Tars tacked on one run in the seventh and another two in the
eighth to defeat Saint Anselm 8-3.
Lucas
Valelly, Mike
Purcell and Hunter
Mayfield each notched two hits to lead the Tars' lineup.
Mayfield also matched a career-best three runs with two doubles and
a RBI.
Right-hander Matt
Hendricks (2-1) earned the win in 4.0 innings of action.
Hendricks fanned a career-high six, allowed no walks or runs and
scattered two hits.
Starting pitcher Autrey Gates (0-1) was tagged with the loss in
5.1 innings. Gates allowed five runs on six hits, while striking
out three and walking two.
Rollins will next face Concordia-N.Y. on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
The game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. but due to inclement
weather in the area, the game was pushed up.
