Tars Change the Current in Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Tars picked up their first SSC victory of the season in historic fashion on Saturday, defeating Florida Southern in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 28-26) for their first win over the Moccasins since 2013.

Vivian Scuteri led the way for Rollins, tallying 12 kills on a .391 hitting percentage while adding two aces and six total blocks. Kayla Goodloe chipped in nine kills on a .348 clip, while Robinson Repass hit .429 with seven kills. Rylee Yarborough added seven kills of her own and tied Scuteri for the team lead with two aces.

Jenna Garza and Molly Morris split time directing the offense, with Garza leading the way with 23 assists.

Defensively, Remington Doggett contributed five total blocks, while Repass added four. Sarah Seabrooke anchored the back row with 17 digs, while Yarborough and Morris also reached double figures with 11 and 10, respectively.

The Tars came out with the hot hand, as Repass opened the match with a kill. Garza earned the next Rollins point before Goodloe followed with a finish to give the Tars the early edge. Goodloe and Scuteri teamed up for a block to extend the advantage to two before the sides settled into a back-and-forth battle. Florida Southern eventually surged ahead, but Doggett had the answer, delivering a kill before joining Repass for a block to even the score at eight.

A Moccasin error gave Rollins the go-ahead before Repass restored the advantage following an FSC equalizer. Consecutive Florida Southern miscues gave the Tars a two-point cushion, and a Scuteri kill forced the Mocs to call timeout. Another FSC error extended the margin to four before a Lelolai Paulino-Dinzey ace made it five. The Mocs responded with consecutive points, but Goodloe stopped the push with a kill.

Florida Southern's miscues continued to pile up, and a Yarborough ace helped Rollins stretch the lead to 22-15. The Mocs answered with a short run before Grange found the floor and Scuteri delivered an ace to bring up set point. Doggett provided the final blow, closing out the opener, 25-21.

A pair of FSC errors and a Repass kill put the Tars ahead 3-0 to begin the second. Yarborough added a finish shortly after to keep Rollins in front before the Mocs battled back to even the score at four. Florida Southern handed the Tars a few more points to swing the advantage back in Rollins' favor before a five-point Moccasin run flipped the set. Scuteri finally stopped the surge with a kill and answered FSC again later in the frame as the Mocs maintained a narrow advantage.

Repass and Grange teamed up for a block to bring the Tars back within striking distance before Repass delivered a kill to trim the deficit to one. Rollins eventually made its move, using a pair of FSC errors along with scores from Garza and Goodloe to surge ahead, 16-14. Goodloe found the floor again to preserve the advantage, but the Mocs battled back to even things at 17.

Doggett and Scuteri answered with a kill and ace, respectively, to restore a three-point Rollins lead. Florida Southern continued to battle, however, eventually erasing the deficit and pulling out the second set, 25-23, to even the match at one.

Yarborough kicked off the third with a kill before Repass and Goodloe teamed up for a rejection at the net to give Rollins the early advantage. Aryanna Spainhower stepped in and delivered the next Rollins kill to maintain the lead. After the Mocs pulled even, Spainhower answered again, finding the floor to put the Tars back in front.

Yarborough added a kill before Repass and Doggett combined for a block to stretch the advantage to 8-5. Yarborough struck again, and Repass followed with consecutive kills as Rollins continued to control the frame. Florida Southern picked up a point, but Spainhower and Goodloe responded with kills to force a Moccasin timeout. A pair of FSC miscues stretched the Rollins advantage to five before Scuteri twice found the floor to maintain the cushion.

The Mocs mounted a push to close within two, but Yarborough provided the answer and gave Rollins some much-needed breathing room. Goodloe helped maintain the advantage before another Scuteri kill pushed the Tars closer to the finish line. Spainhower delivered the final dagger from the service line, closing out the third with an ace to give Rollins a 25-19 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Goodloe delivered the first Rollins kill of the fourth as the teams traded points early. Florida Southern was the first to find separation, using a run to build a 9-4 advantage. Doggett stopped the surge with a kill before Kai Hazelett checked in and immediately made an impact with a service ace. The Mocs maintained their lead, but Scuteri, Doggett and Yarborough each found the floor to keep Rollins within striking distance.

Goodloe added another kill before Yarborough stepped to the service line and delivered an ace to cut the deficit to three. Florida Southern responded with consecutive points, but the Tars weren't going away. Hazelett sparked the comeback with a kill and followed with another score before Garza and Scuteri joined the attack, helping Rollins erase the deficit and pull even at 16.

The Mocs reclaimed the advantage, but Rollins quickly swung it back the other way. Yarborough and Hazelett delivered back-to-back kills to put the Tars in front as the battle tightened down the stretch. The sides continued to trade blows before a Garza ace finally gave Rollins consecutive points and pushed the Tars toward the finish line. Florida Southern responded to stay alive before Willow Barron stepped onto the court and delivered a kill to keep Rollins moving forward.

The Mocs found just enough to extend the set, eventually pulling even at 24. Hazelett and Scuteri then teamed up for a rejection at the net to give Rollins its first match point. Florida Southern refused to fold, claiming the next two points to turn the tables and earn a set point of its own. A Moccasin service error erased the opportunity and brought the score even at 26.

Morgan Coughlin stepped to the service line, and Scuteri took care of the rest. The sophomore delivered the final two kills of the afternoon, slamming the door on the Mocs and securing the fourth, 28-26, to give Rollins its first conference victory of the season.

FSC falls to 6-6 (1-3 SSC) as Rollins improves to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in SSC play with the victory.

The Tars return to Warden Arena on Friday, October 2, hosting Lynn at 7 p.m.
