Tars Bring the Bite Against Nova Southeastern

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Tars bounced back in a big way on Saturday, taking down Nova Southeastern in four sets inside Warden Arena (25-17, 25-17, 33-35, 25-17).

Kayla Goodloe led a strong offensive showing for the Tars, putting down a season-high 23 kills on a blistering .486 hitting percentage. Cameron Grange joined her in double figures with 13 kills, while Kai Hazelett added 10. Vivian Scuteri was efficient throughout the afternoon, tallying nine kills on a .471 clip to go along with four blocks.

Jenna Garza and Molly Morris once again split time guiding the offense, dishing out 31 and 24 assists, respectively. Garza also made her presence felt from the service line with four aces, while Grange, Scuteri, and Yarborough added two apiece. Defensively, Sarah Seabrooke anchored the back row with 17 digs, Grange adding 10 of her own. The Tars also controlled the net with nine total blocks.

Goodloe wasted no time getting the Tars started, putting down the first point of the match before Hazelett and Scuteri joined the action. Back-to-back kills from Goodloe stretched the early advantage to 5-1, forcing Nova Southeastern into a timeout. Hazelett kept the pressure on with another pair of finishes before Scuteri stopped a small Shark run with a kill. Remington Doggett and Scuteri then paired up for a rejection at the net, Doggett following with a kill of her own to make it 12-6.

Rollins continued to keep the Sharks at arm's length, a Doggett and Robinson Repass block followed by a Garza ace pushing the advantage to 16-9. Nova Southeastern tried to chip away, but the Tars had an answer each time. Grange took over late with three kills down the stretch, Yarborough adding an ace before Scuteri pushed Rollins to set point. Grange delivered the final blow, giving the Tars the opener 25-17.

Goodloe again opened the scoring in the second, adding two more early kills to help Rollins jump ahead 4-1. The Sharks battled back to take an 8-6 advantage, but the Tars quickly flipped the script. Scuteri broke the run with a kill before Yarborough stepped to the service line and helped Rollins rattle off six straight points. An ace from Yarborough and consecutive kills from Grange highlighted the run, putting the Tars ahead 13-8.

Doggett added a kill before Goodloe went back to work, finding consecutive finishes to stretch the lead to six. Repass and Hazelett kept the offense rolling as the Tars pushed toward the finish line, Scuteri and Doggett teaming up for another block along the way. Grange gave Rollins set point with a kill before a Shark error closed the frame 25-17 and gave the Tars a commanding 2-0 advantage.

The third turned into a battle from the jump, neither side able to create much separation. Goodloe continued to lead the charge offensively, while Scuteri, Grange, and Doggett added finishes of their own as the two sides traded points. A Scuteri kill and ace gave Rollins a 15-13 advantage, but the Sharks answered, eventually moving ahead 18-16.

Nova Southeastern stretched its lead to three late, but the Tars refused to go away. A Shark error and Repass kill erased the deficit to tie things at 23, beginning a marathon finish to the frame. Grange answered an NSU set point with a kill at 24-all before Repass did the same at 26. The following point finished with Morgan Coughlin earning the block, giving the Tars the edge. Goodloe gave Rollins another set-point opportunity at 28-27, but the Sharks answered once again.

From there, neither side would budge. Yarborough and Grange each delivered kills to keep the Tars alive before Goodloe did the same at 32 and again at 33. Nova Southeastern finally found the final two points, escaping with the third 35-33 to extend the match.

Rollins made sure there would be no repeat in the fourth.

Garza stepped to the service line and immediately delivered three consecutive aces, putting the Tars ahead 3-0 before Repass and Goodloe stretched the advantage to 7-3. Hazelett and Scuteri teamed up for a block to make it five before the Sharks managed to close the gap to one.

Scuteri stopped the push with a kill, Doggett and Grange following with scores of their own to rebuild the advantage. Another Scuteri kill forced Nova Southeastern into a timeout with Rollins ahead 13-8. Repass and Grange paired for a block before Scuteri delivered an ace, the Tars beginning to pull away.

Rollins slammed the door from there. Goodloe found another kill before a Shark miscue and back-to-back Grange aces stretched the lead to 22-12. Repass pushed the Tars closer with a kill, and a Scuteri-Goodloe rejection brought up match point. Nova Southeastern fought off four chances, but Goodloe made sure there would not be a fifth, putting down her 23rd kill of the afternoon to seal the set 25-17 and the match in four.

Nova Southeastern falls to 8-9 (1-5 SSC), while Rollins improves to 9-8 (2-4 SSC).

The Tars return to action on Friday, October 9, at 7 p.m. when they host the Tritons of Eckerd inside Warden Arena.
