Tars Unable to Hold Off Tritons

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Tars took the opening set on Thursday night inside Warden Arena, but Eckerd battled back to take the next three as Rollins fell in four (25-22, 19-25, 24-26, 22-25).

Cameron Grange led the Rollins attack with 11 kills, adding 17 digs and two aces to her night. Kayla Goodloe followed with 10 kills, while Rylee Yarborough added seven and Robinson Repass finished with six. Remington Doggett was efficient in the middle, putting down five kills on seven swings for a .714 hitting percentage.

Jenna Garza and Molly Morris once again split setting duties, dishing out 23 and 15 assists, respectively. Garza added two aces, while Morris, Morgan Coughlin and Lelolai Paulino-Dinzey each chipped in one. Grange finished with a team-high 17 digs, while Goodloe led the effort at the net with five total blocks. Repass added three blocks, with Vivian Scuteri recording two.

Goodloe opened the night with the first Rollins kill before Yarborough answered an Eckerd point to even things at two. The teams traded blows early, with Goodloe striking again before a Morris ace tied the frame at four.

Grange put down back-to-back kills to give Rollins its first advantage before the Tritons answered to tie things at seven. The Tars began to find some separation from there, using a Repass kill and consecutive blocks from Repass and Goodloe to build a 10-7 edge and force an Eckerd timeout.

Rollins kept its foot on the gas out of the break. A pair of Triton errors stretched the lead before Grange delivered an ace, giving the Tars a 15-8 advantage. Goodloe added two more kills, while Doggett put away consecutive scores as Rollins pushed the difference to 20-13.

Eckerd refused to go quietly, stringing together four straight to pull within three at 20-17. Repass stopped the run with a kill before the Tritons cut the difference to one, but Goodloe answered to give Rollins some breathing room.

Repass followed with another kill before an Eckerd error brought up set point. The Tritons held off the first opportunity, but Kai Hazelett slammed the door with a kill to give Rollins the opener, 25-22.

Eckerd jumped out in front to begin the second, using an early run to build a 9-3 advantage. Goodloe stopped the surge with a kill, and Yarborough added another before Rollins began to chip away.  A Repass kill sparked the Tars before a Triton error and Garza ace brought Rollins within two at 12-10. Repass struck again, and Grange followed with an ace to complete the comeback and knot the frame at 13.

The Tritons responded immediately, however, rattling off five straight to regain control. Yarborough and Scuteri tried to halt the run with kills, but Eckerd maintained its advantage down the stretch and evened the match with a 25-19 win.

Repass opened the third with a kill before Eckerd grabbed the early advantage. Grange, Scuteri, and Doggett provided answers for the Tars, but the Tritons slowly stretched their lead to 14-8. Grange found the floor before a Triton error and Paulino-Dinzey ace helped cut into the deficit. Yarborough later added a kill and an ace, but Eckerd continued to hold off the Rollins push, eventually taking a 21-15 advantage.

Then the Tars rallied. Grange and Goodloe each put down kills before Yarborough added two of her own, cutting the deficit to three. A Goodloe and Willow Barron block followed by an Eckerd error pulled Rollins within one at 22-21.

The Tritons grabbed the next point, but a service error kept the door open. Eckerd reached set point at 24-22 before another service error gave the Tars life, and Grange delivered to erase the final point of the deficit and tie things at 24. Eckerd answered with consecutive kills, escaping with the third, 26-24, and taking a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Scuteri opened the fourth with a kill, but the Tritons responded with an early push to take a 7-2 lead. Yarborough stopped the run before Grange added a kill and teamed up with Scuteri for a block as Rollins tried to work its way back into the frame.

Goodloe began to heat up, putting away a pair of kills as the teams traded points through the middle of the set. Eckerd eventually stretched the difference to seven at 18-11 before Addilyn Kegerreis came off the bench and immediately delivered a kill. Grange followed with two kills during a 4-0 Rollins run, cutting the deficit to 18-15. The Tritons answered to push their lead back to five, but the Tars had another run in them.

Scuteri found the floor before Coughlin stepped to the service line and delivered an ace, with an Eckerd error pulling Rollins within one at 20-19. The Tritons responded with three straight to regain control, but Grange kept the Tars alive with another kill. Garza followed with an ace before another Eckerd error made it a one-point set once again at 23-22. The Tritons, however, found the final two points to close out the fourth, 25-22, and secure the match.

Eckerd improves to 12-7 overall and 4-4 in Sunshine State Conference play, while Rollins moves to 9-9 overall and 2-5 in the SSC.
