Greetings #TARnation! If you can find the time between dips in the ocean and reapplying sunscreen while on spring break, let's get you caught up on the last week in Rollins athletics:
- Softball (18-5) continued their annual tradition of dominating teams from the northeast during their break. The Tars went 7-1 while playing four doubleheaders in the past week, including three shutouts and three run-rule wins. Leadoff hitter Bri Perantoni is swinging a hot bat; she currently has a 15-game hit streak working, including six multi-hit games in her last eight. In the circle, Reese Twiggs is undefeated this year, and holds a 0.61 ERA, the 7th-lowest in the entire country.
- Women's lacrosse (5-2) is up to #17 in the national poll after a pair of convincing wins. On Thursday, they defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 10-5, and then laid a whooping on Lee Monday night, winning 21-7. Katie Bell scored ten goals in the two games, while Delaney Hudson accounted for four goals and five assists.
- Women's tennis (7-3) has won six straight matches, including a nice 5-2 effort against Southeastern on Saturday. Three different Tars are tied for the team lead with seven singles wins: sophomore Nancy Liu (who is undefeated from position one), freshman Amina Taibi, and freshman Amina Abdulloeva. The only losses that the team has suffered this season came at the hands of three Top-5 ranked teams.
- Sailing veered themselves in the right direction with an impressive second-place finish at the Turner Team Race, hosted by the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. Rollins posted a 13-3 mark, including a very impressive 5-0 in the Top 5. Their finish qualifies the team for the 2025 SAISA Open Team Race Championship in April.
- Women's golf found success on the west coast, placing second of 14 teams at the Fujikura Invitational at Cal State San Marcos. Senior Carla Alvarez finished fourth overall thanks to two rounds under par, while teammate Megan Docherty was right behind in fifth, just one stroke back.
- Swimming kicked off their National Championship pursuit on Tuesday in Indianapolis as Seth Basinger, Evan McInerny, Trey Carter, and William Slowey finished ninth of 19 teams in the 800 free relay. The championships will continue through Saturday.
- Baseball (13-6) went 1-2 in their three games last week. They defeated Tiffin University 3-1 before dropping a contest to both Gannon (11-7) and Flagler (8-5). Despite the two losses, Rollins remains nationally ranked (#21 in the NCBWA poll) and lead the SSC in batting average (.336), hits per game (12), and home runs (22).
- Men's tennis split their two matches, dropping a close one to #14 Wayne State, 4-3 before bouncing back with a 4-1 win over Mount Olive.
- Rowing hosted Embry-Riddle and Florida to Lake Virginia on Saturday for the Rollins Invitational. The men collected a number of second-place finishes, and also claimed victory with their Novice 4 boat. The women also had ERAU and Florida, and also added Barry to the mix. Rollins again was able to finish runner-up in multiple events, but ceded the event to Embry-Riddle.
- Men's lacrosse lost in an overtime heartbreaker at Concordia Irvine in California, losing 12-11. They then matched up with #2 Adelphi in the Golden State on Monday, falling by a final of 16-8.
- Men's golf battled through tough weather conditions in Valdosta, Georgia to take a seventh-place finish at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate. Sean Dobson was the top performer with an 11th-place finish on the individual board.
