ORLANDO, Fla. (March 1, 2025) - Rollins was back in action on Saturday afternoon when the University of Charleston paid a visit to Orlando. Unfortunately for the Tars, the #15 Golden Eagles proved too much, prevailing 4-2 in the match and ending the Tars (5-3) three game winning streak.
Rollins got off to a hot start with
Luke Quaynor and
Richard Stoiberer taking the first doubles match of the day on number one. The tides would turn on the second and third courts of doubles though, with Charleston grabbing wins in both matches. The two victories gave the Golden Eagles the doubles point and an early lead in the match.
On the singles court, Rollins again jumped out to a fast start.
Nico de Giacomo was the first to finish on third singles, dominating in two sets: 6-0, 6-1. Charleston quickly returned the favor, however, as UC's Louay Makke dropped Rollins freshman
Pietro Cappellaro by a score of 6-1, 6-0 on five.
Number four went the way of the Tars, with
Richard Stoiberer building on his momentum from the doubles courts. The junior grabbed his fifth win on the season, playing just the second time in the fourth slot. Stoiberer triumphed 6-3, 6-3 to knot the match score at two wins a piece.
The good fortune would soon run out for the Tars.
Luke Quaynor was defeated in number one singles, 6-2, 6-3 while
Phillip McMurray experienced the same fate, dropping his match on six 7-5, 6-0. The two victories on the Golden Eagles' side gave Charleston a 4-2 match win.
"Today was tough. Not the kind of match we wanted to turn in against a top 20 opponent," said head coach
Jay Friedman. "I was happy the guys tried to get going energy-wise, but it never took hold and translated today. We got what we earned. Unfortunate."
The Tars will look to bounce back on Monday afternoon when they host Grand Valley State University. Match play will begin at 1:00pm from USTA's National Collegiate Campus. Be sure to stay up to date on action all season long on RollinsSports.com.
