WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 28, 2025) - Women's tennis put together their signature performance of the young season on Friday, battling back from an early deficit to secure a narrow 4-3 victory over #13 and previously undefeated Saint Leo for their first SSC win of the season. After falling on the doubles side, the Tars rallied for four singles wins to come out on top, moving them to 4-3 on the year.
Saint Leo won the first two doubles matches on courts one and two in decisive fashion to earn the point.
Milla Falster and
Stella Fruijtier battled hard on court three, but fell short as well, 7-5.
Rollins had their backs against the wall after the first match of singles play as the Lions captured court three. The Tars made it on the board next as
Amina Abdulloeva breezed through number six, 6-1, 6-4. Moments later, Saint Leo earned their third point of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win on three, putting them up 3-1 overall.
All the Lions needed was one more singles match to take home a victory.
Nancy Liu was not having it, though. The sophomore took the number one singles match winning 6-3, 7-6 (0) to pull the Tars within one. In second singles,
Amina Taibi continued her winning ways, earning a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory. The junior's efforts in her first conference match at the second slot meant that the team scores were knotted at three a piece.
With only one match left to be decided,
Nina Mitrofanova found herself in a pivotal bout on five. The first set was grueling, but the graduate student showed her experience with a 7-6 win that featured a 12-10 tiebreaker. She then capitalized on her momentum, winning the second set 6-4 to improve her individual record to 5-1 on the season while giving Rollins the determining fourth match point.
The Tars have now won three matches in a row, and will take the winning streak into Monday's match with Grand Valley State University. The match will once again take place at the USTA National Campus at 1:00pm. Tune in for updates all season long on RollinsSports.com.
