HICKORY, N.C. (February 15, 2025) – The seventh-ranked Rollins men's lacrosse team dropped a road contest on Saturday at No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne, 15-9. The Tars are now 2-1 on the season, while the Bears improve to 3-0.
Sam Mattson led the Tars with three goals and an assist, while
Logan Myers chipped in with a goal and two assists.
Frankie Hapney picked up a team-high three ground balls and scored a goal, and
Maxwell Beuck (2-1) made 19 saves on 34 shots in goal for the Blue and Gold.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- Rollins started strong, with Mattson netting the opening goal just 28 seconds into the contest.
- Nate Paulo made it 2-0 a few minutes later, and before long the Tars had goals from Max Armitage, Mattson, Hapney, and a second from Mattson, pushing the Rollins lead to 6-0 with 2:39 left in the opening quarter.
- The Bears got two quick goals late in the period, making it a 6-2 game heading to the second.
Second Quarter
- Lenoir-Rhyne scored the first two goals of the second quarter before Myers found the back of the net to make it 8-5 Tars.
- The Bears added one more before the half, trimming the deficit to 8-6.
Third Quarter
- Lenoir-Rhyne outscored the Tars 4-0 in the third, taking a 10-8 lead.
Fourth Quarter
- Sean Caracciolo made it a one-goal game with a marker just over three minutes into the fourth, but the Bears pulled away with five unanswered goals to close out the game, giving the home side a 15-9 win.
