Greetings #TARnation!
I know you've been busy sipping on cider and looking for the perfect pumpkin at the patch, so chances are you didn't catch everything that happened in Rollins Athletics last week. Luckily, I have a recap for you right here!
- Men's soccer had a wild week. Last Wednesday against Eckerd, a red card in the 20th minute had the Tars a man down for the remaining 70 minutes of play. A penalty kick save from Kilian Vallant lit a fire under the lads, and they scored three straight short-handed goals. Unfortunately, the Tritons scored twice late, ending the game in a 3-3 draw. The Tars then hosted the reigning national champion, Lynn, at Cahall-Sandspur Field on Saturday. From start to finish, Rollins played their best game of the season, and took down the Fighting Knights 4-3. It was their first loss in 32 matches dating back to 2023. Tim Arnhold scored twice in the Lynn game, and had an assist against Eckerd, leading to him being named SSC Offensive Player of the Week. A shout out to freshman Tolu Junaid who came off the bench and dished out two assists in the game as well. Â
- NATIONAL CHAMPION. For the second time, Charlie Ross claims the title as the best collegiate slalom skier in the country following his gold medal finish at the NCWSA National Championship in El Centro, California. The Tars took 5th place overall as a team, making it eight straight years with a Top 5 finish at the natty. Other notables include Kamil Belmrah (2nd, men's slalom), Jaime Palomino (6th, men's slalom), Niki Attensam (7th, men's slalom), Hannah Stopnicki (2nd, women's tricks), Elsa Bergsgard (9th, women's tricks), Pablo Font Corona (3rd, men's tricks), and Leona Berner (5th, women's jump and 12th, women's overall.) Congratulations to head coach Marc Bedsole on another phenomenal year!
- Sailing enjoyed perfect racing conditions over the weekend en route to a first-place finish at the Lake Virginia Invitational. The Tars claimed four wins in the 14 total races with Milo Miller/Jane McKenzie taking race three, Milo Miller/Alexander Goldsmith taking race ten, Milo Fleming/Mollie Wood taking race twelve, and Caleb Kinnear/Adelaide Matzky taking the final race of the event.Â
- Alyssa Novoa represented women's tennis at the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia, and was fantastic. She was one of only sixteen players selected to play in the prestigious event, and made it all the way to the semifinals before bowing out to the #1 seed. Novoa is the first Rollins women's tennis player to compete in ITA Cup singles in more than 20 years. Congratulation on a fantastic weekend Alyssa!
Â
- Volleyball secured a pair of wins during a busy week. It started with a five-set home win against Eckerd on Tuesday, followed by a 3-0 sweep of the Saint Leo Lions on Thursday. Following thr weekend off, the Tars returned home, but fell to the Florida Tech Panthers last night.Â
-Men's golf had a solid showing at the Fripp Island to Bermuda Invite in South Carolina. After day one, the Tars were sitting in fourth place, but slid to eighth by the end of the tournament. Jules Haessig was the top scorer, finishing tied for sixth overall on the individual leaderboard with a three round score of even par. Also, shout out to junior Clarence Chapman III, who was named the SSC Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Copperhead Invitational last week.
- Women's soccer split their two matches last week. On Wednesday, they traveled to St. Petersburg to face Eckerd, and secured a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Alayna Townsend on a feed from Emma Griner in the 88th minute. In Saturday's match at Lynn, the Tars fell by a similar 1-0 score.Â
- Women's golf played in the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on the campus of North Carolina over the weekend. While the team did not finish where they wanted, they gained valuable experience against a 15 team field that consisted of some of the top Division I programs in the country. Freshman Addy Vogt had the best finish for the Tars with a 223 (+13).Â
- Swimming faced a pair of ranked SSC opponents in a tough weekend. On Friday, Nova Southeastern held serve in their own pool down in Ft. Lauderdale. After a long drive home, the Tars had to turn around and host #1 women/#2men Tampa at the Alfond Pool. Luke Dinges and Will Slowey each had victories for the Tars, while Carter Kegle, Seth Basinger, and Alex Kwarcinski each had runner-up finishes.Â
- Men's soccer (6-3-3) is riding high after their upset of #1 Lynn, and will look to take down another ranked opponent tonight when they host #14 Florida Tech (6-1-5). The two teams met earlier this season in Melbourne, with the Panthers taking a 2-0 win. On Saturday, the lads will play in their final regular season home game versus Embry-Riddle (2-9-2). Be sure to come out early as we honor the seniors taking the field for the last time at home. The ceremony will begin around 5:30 with a 6pm game start.Â
- Sailing, fresh off their Lake Virginia Invitational victory, is headed to Jacksonville for the SAISA Fall Fleet Race Championship that will take place all weekend Friday-Sunday.Â
- Volleyball (13-9) has a pair of SSC road matches this weekend. Friday finds them in West Palm Beach for a battle against Palm Beach Atlantic (15-5), followed by a swim with the Nova Southeastern Sharks (12-6) on Saturday.Â
- Both the men's and women's tennis teams will take to the courts of the brand new Tennis & Golf Center for the first time. The two teams will simultaneously take on the Southeastern University Fire in a mix of doubles and singles matches all day long on Saturday.  Â
- Women's soccer (5-5-2) is off on Wednesday and will be ready to go on the road at unbeaten #22 Embry-Riddle (5-0-6) on Saturday night.Â
- #12 Men's golf wraps up their fall slate with a trip down I-4 to Championsgate for the Citrus Intercollegiate. The two day event will take place on Monday and Tuesday. Last year, Rollins was the runner-up in the event as a team with RJ Glod claiming first place on the individual leaderboard.
- #24 Women's golf is also in action for the final time this fall as they head in the opposite direction north to St. Augustine for the Flagler Fall Slam at Marsh Creek Country Club.Â
