WINTER PARK, Fla. (Sept. 21, 2024) – The Rollins volleyball team collected two more wins on Saturday, defeating Southern Connecticut State 3-0 and earning a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Trevecca Nazarene on the final day of the Rollins College Invitational, pushing the Tars to 9-2 on the season. Following the conclusion of the tournament,
Lana Gerard,
Natalie Horsley, and
Jadyn Troutman were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Rollins 3, SCSU 0
The Tars hit .312 while holding the Owls (1-10) to an .056 hitting percentage in a 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 sweep.
Marta Tsaneva led the way with a match-high 10 kills while hitting .529 and adding a pair of blocks.
Cameron Grange tallied nine kills and seven digs and
Emma Gongora chipped in with eight kills, five digs, and three service aces.
Jenna Garza (16 assists) and
Molly Morris (12 assists, seven digs, three service aces) shared the setting duties while
Sarah Seabrooke picked up a match-high 15 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- Rollins jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead in the opening set before SCSU cut the deficit to five at 15-10.
- The Owls got as close as 21-18 but the Tars took the final four points to win the set, 25-18.
Set Two
- Set two saw the Blue and Gold take an early 10-6 lead, but the Owls scored the next four points to tie things up at 10.
- Southern Connecticut State pulled ahead briefly at 18-17, but Rollins closed out the frame on an 8-2 run to win it, 25-20.
Set Three
- The third set was close, with neither side leading by more than two points until the Tars opened a small gap at 13-9.
- Rollins continued to pull away for the remainder of the frame, cruising to a 25-16 win to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Rollins 3, TNU 2
In the nightcap, Rollins trailed 2-1 before bouncing back to win the final two sets to claim a 25-22, 21-25, 10-25, 25-16, 15-10 win over the Trojans (3-8). Gerard had a team-high 16 kills to go along with nine digs and four blocks, while Troutman tallied 14 kills, five digs, and five blocks. Horsley registered a team-leading 41 assists in addition to seven kills and eight digs, and
Adriana Lopez had a match-high 18 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- TNU took a quick 5-1 lead in the first, but the Tars chipped away, eventually pulling in front at 13-12.
- A 4-0 spurt that featured a pair of Gerard kills and a pair of blocks from Gongora and Makayla Moran increased the lead to 18-14, and another 4-0 run later pushed it to 24-18.
- The Trojans scored the next four points before Troutman finished the set with a kill to give Rollins a 25-22 win.
Set Two
- The Blue and Gold scored the first four points of the second set only to see TNU respond with a 13-2 run to race out to a 13-6 lead.
- Rollins mounted a late comeback, but it came up short as the Trojans evened the match with a 25-21 win.
Set Three
- In the third frame, Trevecca Nazarene led from start to finish, ending the set on a 10-1 run to take it, 25-10.
Set Four
- Rollins bounced back in a big way in the fourth set, scoring eight of the first 10 points and taking a double-digit lead at 14-4.
- TNU got to within five, but the Tars maintained a comfortable cushion the rest of the way, winning the set by a 25-16 score to tie the match and send it to a fifth set.
Set Five
- The final set bounced back and forth until the Tars rattled off four points in a row to earn an 8-4 edge.
- Trevecca Nazarene rallied to close the gap to a single point at 10-9, but the Blue and Gold closed things out on a 5-1 run to win the set, 15-10, clinching the 3-2 match win.
