BUFFALO, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2024) – The Rollins volleyball team suffered its first two defeats of the season on the final day of the D'Youville Tournament Saturday, falling to Seton Hill, 3-0, before dropping a 3-1 decision to Gannon, putting the Tars at 6-2 on the year.
Lana Gerard broke the modern-era record for career service aces on the day, recording one ace in each match.
Seton Hill 3, Rollins 0
The Tars kept things close in each set against the Griffins (7-0), but came up short in all three, falling by scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 25-20.
Jadyn Troutman led the team with 10 kills and four blocks (one solo), while Gerard tallied eight kills.
Natalie Horsley led all players with 22 assists and
Adriana Lopez picked up a team-high five digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- The Tars led early in the opening frame, pushing the lead to as many as six at 12-6.
- Seton Hill scored the next five points to make it 12-11, and shortly thereafter the Griffins had tied things up at 15.
- Rollins trailed for the first time in the set at 18-17, quickly responding with back-to-back kills to go back in front, 19-18.
- The Griffins bounced back with two straight points to go back in front, and Seton Hill closed out the set on a 4-1 run to win it, 25-22.
Set Two
- Set two saw the Griffins run out to a 13-4 lead, eventually building the margin to 21-9.
- Rollins continued to fight, scoring six straight points to cut the lead in half (21-15), but the two sides traded sideouts from that point on, giving Seton Hill a 25-18 win.
Set Three
- SHU scored five of the first six points in the third set before the Blue and Gold went on a 4-1 spurt to get within a point at 6-5.
- The Griffins again extended their lead to 21-14, and again the Tars fought back, scoring four straight points to cut it to 21-18.
- Rollins couldn't close the gap any further as Seton Hill pulled away for a 25-20 win, completing the 3-0 sweep.
Gannon 3, Rollins 1
In the nightcap, Rollins won the opening set and was one point away from taking a 2-0 lead, but ultimately Gannon (5-3) walked away with a 3-1 win, 21-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-13. Gerard led all players with 16 kills and added 12 digs, in addition to recording her 146th career service ace, the most ever by a Tar in the 25-point rally scoring era (since 2008).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- Rollins jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the opening set, but Gannon then scored five points in a row to tie it up at nine.
- The Tars scored the next three points, and a short time later the lead had ballooned to seven points (19-12).
- The Golden Knights again strung together five consecutive points, but the Blue and Gold were able to stay in front and take the set, 25-21.
Set Two
- The second set was highly competitive, featuring 14 ties and eight lead changes.
- Gerard made history with a service ace to tie the set at 4-4, moving her to the top of the list for career service aces in the 25-point rally scoring era with 146.
- The Tars were up 14-12 when the Golden Knights rattled off six straight points to take an 18-14 lead.
- A kill from Emma Gongora sparked a 5-0 response from the Blue and Gold, pushing Rollins back in front, 19-18.
- After Gannon briefly retook the lead (21-20), the Tars scored three straight points to go up 23-21.
- The Golden Knights then scored three consecutive points to earn set point at 24-23, but a kill from Gerard followed by a service ace from Troutman flipped things around, giving the Tars set point at 25-24.
- The tables turned once again as Gannon scored the next three points to snatch a 27-25 win, tying things up at a set apiece.
Set Three
- In the third frame, the Tars held an early 5-2 lead, but the Golden Knights used a 5-1 run to pull in front, 7-6.
- Rollins kept things close as the two sides split the next 20 points, but Gannon went on a roll to close things out, scoring eight of the last nine points to turn a 17-16 lead into a 25-17 win.
Set Four
- The Golden Knights went up 7-3 early in the third, but a few points later the Tars got back-to-back kills from Makayla Moran to get within one at 8-7.
- Gannon pulled away thanks to a 10-2 burst that made it 21-11, and the Golden Knights went on to win the set, 25-13, taking the match three sets to one.

The Tars will be back at home next weekend to host the annual Rollins College Invitational September 20-21. Rollins will play three times during the tournament, beginning with a 7 p.m. match against Millersville on Friday, September 20.
