Lopez Reaches 1,000 Career Digs as Tars Improve to 6-0

Rollins swept both opponents on Friday to stay perfect on the season

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Sept. 13, 2024) – The Rollins volleyball team picked up two more wins on the first day of the D'Youville Tournament on Friday, sweeping Ursuline and D'Youville to move to 6-0 on the season. Libero Adriana Lopez surpassed 1,000 career digs in the victory over the Saints.

Rollins 3, Ursuline 0

The Tars had little trouble with Ursuline in the opening match of the tournament, taking down the Arrows (0-5) in three sets, 25-20, 25-16, 25-11. Makayla Moran led all players with 10 kills and hit .625, while Jadyn Troutman added nine kills and hit .615. Lopez collected a match-high 13 digs, while Jenna Garza (11 assists) and Natalie Horsley (10 assists) ran the offense for the Blue and Gold.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • The Tars fell behind early, trailing 5-2 and 8-5, but a 4-0 run that was keyed by three Moran kills pushed Rollins in front, 9-8.
  • After briefly surrendering the lead once more, the Blue and Gold eventually put together a 5-0 burst to pull ahead, 20-15.
  • Ursuline couldn't get back to within less than three points the rest of the way as the Tars won the frame, 25-20.
Set Two
  • Set two saw Rollins jump out to a 4-1 lead, though the Arrows battled back to take a 10-7 advantage.
  • Ursuline led 15-14, but the Tars caught fire from there, closing out the set on a blistering 11-1 run to win it, 25-16.
Set Three
  • The third set started out close, with the Arrows even leading 6-5 early on, but it wouldn't stay close for long.
  • A 9-1 burst gave the Tars a 14-7 edge, and the Blue and Gold didn't let up, running away with the set, 25-11, to clinch the 3-0 sweep.

Rollins 3, D'Youville 0

In the nightcap, Rollins took down the host Saints (0-6) in straight sets, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20. Lana Gerard and Emma Gongora each recorded a match-high 12 kills, while Troutman contributed six kills and six blocks. Horsley dished out a match-leading 34 assists and Lopez picked up a match-best 14 digs, including her 1,000th career dig.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • The first set was highly competitive, with the largest lead for either side being two points.
  • A Gongora kill tied things up at 22 and a Troutman block followed by a Lopez ace gave the Tars set point at 24-22.
  • The Saints rallied to win the next two points to tie things up at 24, but Gongora came up with back-to-back kills to punctuate the set, winning it for the Tars, 26-24.
Set Two
  • Set two saw D'Youville hold a slim lead early, with Rollins not able to edge in front until it was 12-11.
  • A 4-0 run a few minutes later gave the Tars some breathing room at 21-16, but before long the Saints had clawed back to within a point at 23-22.
  • A Gongora kill gave the Blue and Gold two set points, and although D'Youville won the next rally to stay alive, Gerard ended the frame with a kill to seal it at 25-23 for the Tars.
Set Three
  • Rollins used a 10-2 spurt midway through the third to turn a tight 12-11 set into a comfortable 22-13 lead.
  • The Saints continued to battle, scoring seven of the next nine points to make it 24-20, but a Troutman kill closed things out for the Tars at 25-20, completing the 3-0 sweep.
