WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (February 23, 2024) – The seventh-ranked Rollins women's lacrosse team held on for a 22-18 road win at Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday. The Tars are now 5-0 on the year, 1-0 in conference play, while the Sailfish drop to 0-3 overall, 0-1 in SSC action.
Caroline Gastonguay led all players with seven goals and 11 points, while
Lauren Noonan chipped in with three goals and two assists.
Abigail DeGroat and Charlotte Gastongauy both contributed three goals, and
Jorie Alf added two goals and two ground balls.
Holyn Trautwein led the Tars with five draw controls, and
Angelina Vitale (1-0) got the win, stopping three of the 11 shots she faced in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- PBA scored the first three goals of the game before Sydney Nickel got the Tars on the board just over seven minutes into the contest.
- Caroline Gastonguay netted her first of the night at the 2:21 mark after two more Sailfish goals had occurred, making it a 5-2 game.
- DeGroat found the net with just 10 seconds left in the quarter to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Second Quarter
- Caroline Gastonguay got the Tars within one just 42 seconds into the second quarter with a woman-up goal, but PBA answered just over a minute later to make it 6-4.
- Caroline Gastonguay's third of the game came just 13 ticks after that, and Molly Mendes scored the next marker to tie the game at 6-6 just over four minutes into the period.
- After PBA scored, DeGroat and Charlotte Gastonguay found the net less than 30 seconds apart to give the Blue and Gold its first lead of the night, 8-7.
- Palm Beach Atlantic rallied with three straight to go up 10-8, but Carsyn Christel stopped the momentum with a goal at the 3:11 mark.
- The Gastonguay sisters each scored in the final minute of the half, with Charlotte's goal coming with 46 seconds left and Caroline's with 24 seconds left, pushing the Tars up by one (11-10) at the break.
Third Quarter
- The Sailfish tied things up at 11 just 20 seconds into the third quarter before Rollins rattled off four straight goals, including two from Caroline Gastonguay, to give the Tars a 15-11 advantage.
- The teams traded the final five goals of the quarter as Rollins carried a 17-14 lead into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
- Alf scored the first goal of the final period, with PBA answering quickly to make it an 18-15 score.
- Charlotte and Caroline Gastonguay scored the next two, followed by Noonan at the 3:37 mark which gave Rollins a comfortable 21-15 edge.
- The Sailfish netted three markers in the closing minutes, along with a goal from DeGroat, which secured the 22-18 win.
