Tars Swept by Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. (Sept. 22, 2023) – The Rollins volleyball team dropped a conference match on Friday night at Saint Leo, falling 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-11). Rollins now stands at 6-5 on the year and 1-2 in SSC matches, while Saint Leo goes to 7-2 and 2-1 in conference play.
 
Emma Begley led the Tars with eight kills while Jadyn Troutman, Lana Gerard, and Emily Diaz each chipped in with six kills, with Gerard adding seven digs and Diaz posting six digs. Natalie Horsley tallied a team-high 22 assists to go along with seven digs and Adriana Lopez picked up a team-leading 10 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • Saint Leo jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first set, and before long the Lions were up 14-9.
  • Rollins was able to get back within three (20-17) after a 3-1 run, but Saint Leo maintained a comfortable lead as it won the opening frame, 25-20.
Set Two
  • Set two saw the home team take a 5-2 lead, but the Tars responded with three straight points to tie it at five.
  • SLU answered back with an 8-0 burst to go up 13-5, and the Lions never looked back, winning the set, 25-18.
Set Three
  • Rollins scored five straight points early in the third to take a 5-3 lead, but Saint Leo bounced back with a 10-0 spurt that gave the Lions a 14-6 lead.
  • The Tars weren't able to string together consecutive points for the rest of the match, as Saint Leo took the third set by a 25-11 score to complete the sweep.
  • After trading sideouts, ERAU scored four of the next five, giving the visitors a 12-9 advantage.
  • Following two more sideouts that made it 13-10, Rollins rallied to win four of the next five points, staving off two match points in the process, to tie the set at 14-14.
  • The comeback bid ultimately came up just short, as Embry-Riddle was able to bounce back with two straight kills to capture a 16-14 win and escape Warden Arena with a 3-2 victory.
