ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Sept. 23, 2023) – The Rollins volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-15) defeat at Eckerd on Saturday, dropping the Tars to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while the Tritons improve to 9-2, 2-2 in SSC matches.
Emily Diaz led the Tars with nine kills while
Lana Gerard chipped in with seven kills and five digs.
Natalie Horsley racked up a match-high 23 assists to go along with give digs and
Adriana Lopez collected a team-leading nine digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- Eckerd won the first four points of the match and quickly established a 10-4 lead.
- A 3-0 spurt sparked by back-to-back kills from Emma Begley brought the Tars back to within three at 14-11, but the Tritons used a 5-0 run to pull out to a 20-12 advantage.
- Rollins won three of the next four points only to see Eckerd close out the set with four consecutive scores, taking the frame, 25-15.
Set Two
- The home team took an early 6-1 lead in set two, but the Tars responded with a 5-0 burst to draw level at 6-6.
- Eckerd used a 4-0 rally to turn an 11-11 tie into a 15-11 lead, but the Blue and Gold kept it close, getting back to within a point on a Diaz kill that made it 18-17.
- From there, the Tritons won seven of the final nine points of the set, winning it, 25-19.
Set Three
- Rollins won the opening point of the third set, but Eckerd quickly went ahead, 6-2.
- Consecutive kills from Begley and Diaz trimmed the deficit to one at 7-6, but the Tritons scored six of the following seven points to take a 13-7 lead.
- EC closed out the match on an 8-2 run to take the set, 25-15, clinching the 3-0 sweep.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will return home next weekend to host Lynn on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. That night will be Colorful and Courageous Night at Warden Arena, and it will kick off a season-long five-match homestand for Rollins.
