Volleyball Moves to 4-0 with Two More Wins

Rollins only dropped three sets across all four matches this weekend

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 2, 2023) – The Rollins volleyball team wrapped up a perfect weekend at the PSAC East Kickoff Tournament with two more victories on Saturday, improving to a perfect 4-0 on the season. For the Tars, it's their first 4-0 start since the 2013 campaign. The Blue and Gold got the day started with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-20) sweep of the host school, West Chester, and capped the weekend with a 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15) win over Chestnut Hill. 
 
RC 3, WCU 0

Lana Gerard led all players with 12 kills and added five digs and three service aces, while Emma Rome chipped in with 10 kills and six digs. Emma Begley added seven kills and hit .417 while also registering a career-high five service aces. Natalie Horsley tallied a match-high 27 assists and Adriana Lopez collected a match-leading 13 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • After a close start to the set, Rollins created some separation with a 6-1 run to pull ahead, 18-10.
  • A 3-0 spurt increased the lead to double digits at 23-13 and the Tars easily took the set by a score of 25-15.
Set Two
  • The Rams held a one-point lead at 16-15 in set two when Rollins rattled off five straight points to go up 20-16.
  • After WCU (1-1) got back within two at 21-19, the Tars scored four of the final five points to clinch the frame, 25-20.
Set Three
  • Set three saw the two teams stay within three points of each other until the Blue and Gold went on a 4-0 spurt to lift its lead to 17-13.
  • A late 5-1 burst gave the Tars a number of match points at 24-17, and a few rallies later a kill by Horsley closed things out with a 25-20 set three victory.
 
RC 3, CHC 1

Jadyn Troutman posted the highest kill total of the weekend, putting down 22 kills and hitting .486 to go along with three service aces, seven digs, and a match-high eight blocks. Gerard registered 13 kills and nine digs while hitting .462, and Begley tallied six kills and five blocks and Robinson Repass notched a season-best six blocks. Horsley posted a season-best 45 assists and picked up six digs, while Lopez led all players with 11 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • Rollins did not allow the Griffins (0-2) to score consecutive points as it built a solid 15-7 lead in the opening set.
  • Chestnut Hill battled back to get within three points at 16-13 before the Tars won five of the next six points to go up 21-14.
  • The Blue and Gold closed out the set by winning four of the final five points, taking it by a score of 25-18.
Set Two
  • The second set was a tale of two massive runs, the first of which was a 13-4 burst that turned a 10-9 deficit into a 22-14 lead for the Tars.
  • CHC responded in a big way, scoring 11 straight points to close out the frame with a 25-22 win to tie the match at one set apiece.
Set Three
  • Rollins quickly regained the momentum, winning seven of the first 10 points to take an early 7-3 lead in set three.
  • An 8-2 spurt increased the Tar lead to 16-8, and a late 5-0 rally helped boost Rollins to a 25-15 set win.
Set Four
  • The Blue and Gold began the fourth set on a 5-0 run, and before long Rollins was comfortably in control with a 14-7 advantage.
  • The Griffins trimmed the deficit to four (18-14), but the Tars ended things on a 7-1 run to win the set, 25-15, completing the 3-1 match victory.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will host the Rollins Invitational next weekend, taking the floor at Warden Arena for four more matches, beginning with a 3:30 p.m. contest on Friday, Sept. 8 against Chadron State.
