WINTER PARK, Fla. (Sept. 8, 2023) – The Rollins volleyball team dropped a pair of contests at the Rollins Invitational on Friday, falling 3-1 (25-16, 18-25, 25-18, 27-25) to Chadron State before losing 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-22) to Tusculum in the nightcap. The Tars are now 4-2 on the young season.
CSC 3, RC 1
Jadyn Troutman led all players with 21 kills and hit a match-high .405 while also collecting nine digs.
Lana Gerard added 18 kills and nine digs, while
Emma Begley chipped in with eight kills and a match-leading five blocks.
Natalie Horsley racked up 29 assists, five digs, and four blocks, while
Jenna Garza tallied 16 assists and five digs, and
Adriana Lopez had a team-high 21 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- A 6-0 run gave the Eagles (3-2) an 11-5 lead, and before long Chadron State stretched it out to double digits at 19-9.
- The Tars used a 5-1 spurt to get within six at 20-14, but CSC took the opening set, 25-16.
Set Two
- Rollins went on a 7-3 burst to go ahead, 15-11, but the Eagles answered back with five straight points to regain a 16-15 lead.
- The Blue and Gold then went on a tear, finishing the set by winning 10 of the final 12 rallies, including four Troutman kills, to clinch the set, 25-18.
Set Three
- Set three was close until a 6-0 run pushed Chadron State to a 21-14 advantage, and the Eagles didn't look back as they won the frame, 25-18.
Set Four
- CSC jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the fourth, only to see the Tars fight back to within a point at 8-7.
- After the Eagles extended their margin to 14-9, Rollins once again rallied to within one, trimming the deficit to 14-13.
- After trading a few sideouts, the Blue and Gold rattled off seven consecutive points, keyed by three big kills from Gerard, giving the home side a 21-16 advantage.
- Chadron State answered back, scoring six of the next seven points to knot things up at 22.
- Kills from Begley and Emma Rome put the Tars at set point, leading 24-22, but CSC tallied the next three points to earn match point at 25-24.
- Robinson Repass put down a kill to stave off the first match point, but the Eagles scored the next two to clinch the set, 27-25, and the match, 3-1.
TU 3, RC 0
Gerard led all players with 13 kills and Troutman notched a double-double with 11 kills and a match-high 12 digs, while Begley hit .600 with seven kills and three blocks.
Natalie Horsley tallied a match-best 38 assists and added eight digs, while Lopez picked up nine digs and two service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- Tusculum went on a 7-2 run to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 14-10 lead in the opening set.
- Back-to-back kills from Gerard sparked a 4-0 spurt that lifted the Tars back in front, 20-19.
- The Pioneers went on to close out the set winning five of the last six points to take a 25-22 victory.
Set Two
- Set two was close until a 9-1 burst gave TU a commanding 23-14 lead, and the Pioneers would go on to take the frame, 25-17, and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three
- The Tars battled throughout the third set, utilizing a 7-1 rally to pull out to an 18-15 lead.
- Tusculum responded a short time later with a 7-1 run of its own, giving the visitors match point at 24-20.
- After Rollins took two straight points, the Pioneers ended it with a kill, clinching the set, 25-22, to complete the 3-0 sweep.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will wrap up the Rollins Invitational tomorrow, beginning with a 1 p.m. contest against Bluefield State, and ending the tournament at 7:30 against Auburn Montgomery.
