Tars Take Fourth at SAISA South Top 6 Invite

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Sept. 16, 2023) – The Rollins sailing team hosted five schools on Saturday at the SAISA South Top 6 Invite on Lake Virginia, with the Tars taking fourth place overall at the regatta.

Teams arrived at a sunny Lake Virginia with a 5kt Northeasterly breeze. Two boats from each of the SAISA South's top 6 teams combined into one division for a competitive fleet in light and shifty conditions. The breeze bounced between a Northerly and Easterly direction, steadily increasing throughout the day to a refreshing 8-13kts as the sailors finished their last rotation on our newly built Barrett Dock. No breakdowns or protests were filed.

In the A Division, the Rollins boat was driven by Katherine Hamner for races 1-4, with Hilton Kamps coming off the bench for races 5-10. Jane McKenzie crewed all 10 races in the A Division, as that boat tallied 51 points. The A Division boat registered five top-three finishes, including a win in race seven.

The B Division was driven by Jackson McGeough for all 10 races, with Noel Marran serving as crew for the first eight races and Sam Frushone coming off the bench with fresh legs when the breeze piped up. The B Division boat recorded 93 points on the day.

In total, Rollins scored 144 points, finishing fourth. Jacksonville finished first with 75 points, followed by USF (127 points) and Florida State (133 points). Head Coach Esteban Forrer said, "Steady improvement from the team as the season progresses. I'm looking forward to seeing some of our young underclassmen competing at USF tomorrow."

Forrer also said "Special thanks to our PRO Scott Marriott for running efficient and fair racing all day. Thanks to our photographer Mike Watters for coming out and snapping some great shots. Thanks to all the Rollins Tars that supported our team and the competitors throughout racing/rotations. Congratulations to the Jacksonville Fins for taking a commanding victory. USF and FSU rounded out the podium in second and third, respectively. The Tars team finished fourth on their home water. Safe travels back home to all the competitors!"
