Florida Southern Topples Tars in Battle of Top Ten Teams

Rollins suffered its first loss of the year on Saturday

LAKELAND, Fla. (April 8, 2023) – The No. 7 Rollins women's lacrosse team suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday, falling 17-15 at No. 4 Florida Southern. The Tars are now 12-1 on the season, 2-1 in SSC play, while the Mocs go to 11-2 overall, 2-1 in conference games.
 
Caroline Gastonguay finished with five points on two goals and three assists while also posting game-highs in ground balls (4) and caused turnovers (3). Abigail Cawley also tallied five points with a goal and four assists, and Madison McGarry and Lauren Noonan each chipped in with three goals apiece. Claire Barber (4-1) took the loss, making five saves while surrendering 14 goals in 49:07 of game time.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • The Tars got on the board first with a Lauren Noonan goal just 39 seconds into the game.
  • After an FSC goal tied things up 28 seconds later, McGarry answered with her first of the game to put Rollins back in front, 2-1, at the 12:37 mark.
  • Following another Mocassin goal, Claire Reist found the net to help the Tars retake the lead, 3-2, with 7:40 to go in the quarter.
  • McGarry netted her second with 2:48 to go, and FSC answered with a late goal to cut the Rollins lead to 4-3 after 15 minutes of play.
Second Quarter
  • Cawley opened the scoring in the second, with McGarry completing her hat trick just 30 seconds later, making it a 6-3 game in favor of Rollins with 11:25 on the clock.
  • The Mocs found some momentum, rattling off four straight goals over the next seven minutes to take a 7-6 lead.
  • Caroline Bailey stemmed the tide with a goal at 3:32 to tie it at seven, but FSC added two more in the closing minutes to pull ahead, 9-7, at the half.
Third Quarter
  • Noonan scored in the first minute of the third quarter to cut it to 9-8, but Florida Southern answered less than a minute later.
  • The goals kept coming in quick succession, as Noonan completed her hat trick 50 seconds after the previous FSC goal, getting Rollins back to within a goal at 10-9.
  • The Mocs scored twice in the next two minutes to regain a three-goal cushion at 12-9 before Charlotte Gastonguay scored to make it 12-10.
  • After another Florida Southern goal, Charlotte Gastonguay struck again, pulling the Tars to within two at 13-11 around the midway point of the third.
  • The two sides continued to trade goals back and forth, with Jorie Alf scoring in between two more FSC goals to close out the quarter, giving the Mocs a 15-12 advantage after 45 minutes.
Fourth Quarter
  • FSC scored first in the fourth to build its lead to 16-12, but Caroline Gastonguay and Abigail DeGroat netted the next two goals, making it a 16-14 game with 11:22 to go.
  • The Mocs scored with 5:10 go and Caroline Gastonguay quickly answered with a man-down goal just 14 seconds later, but that would prove to be the final tally of the game as Florida Southern held on for the 17-15 win.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will be back at home on Wednesday, April 12, when they host No. 13 Lynn. That game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at Barker Family Stadium.
