No. 7 Rollins Survives Scare from No. 18 Embry-Riddle

The Tars surrendered an 8-2 lead but got the game-winning goal late to stay perfect on the season

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 5, 2023) – The seventh-ranked Rollins women's lacrosse team opened up an 8-2 lead and then had to hold off a late charge to escape with a 9-8 win over visiting No. 18 Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night. The Tars improve to 12-0 and 2-0 in conference play, while the Eagles drop to 10-2, 1-1 in SSC action.
 
Caroline Gastonguay tallied six points with four goals and two assists to go along with a game-high four ground balls, while Charlotte Gastonguay racked up three goals and two ground ball. Abigail Cawley added a goal, two assists, and two ground balls, while Whitney MacMillan had six draw controls and a ground ball. Claire Barber (4-0) got the win, making nine saves while playing all 60 minutes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • The Eagles took the opening draw and went straight down the field to score just 14 seconds into the contest.
  • Caroline Gastonguay quickly answered, netting her first of the night 32 seconds later.
  • Charlotte Gastonguay got her first goal at the 6:31 mark to give the Tars their first lead of the night, and Cawley scored 1:24 later to make it a 3-1 game.
Second Quarter
  • Caroline and Charlotte Gastonguay scored the first two goals of the second quarter, respectively, pushing the lead to 5-1.
  • After an ERAU goal, Charlotte Gastonguay completed her hat trick to make it 6-2.
  • Jorie Alf increased the lead to 7-2, scoring with just 24 seconds left on the clock.
Third Quarter
  • Caroline Gastonguay completed her hat trick with the lone goal of the third quarter, giving Rollins an 8-2 lead with 10:11 to play in the period.
  • Neither team would score for nearly 15 minutes of play from that point.
Fourth Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle found its offense in the fourth quarter, rattling off six straight goals in a span of 8:38, eventually tying the game at 8-8 with 3:09 to play.
  • Just 19 seconds later, Caroline Gastonguay came up with a huge goal, which proved to be the game-winner.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will hit the road for the first time in over a month when they travel to Lakeland to face No. 4 Florida Southern on Saturday, April 8. That contest is set for a 1 p.m. start.
