No. 6 Rollins Downs No. 16 Florida Southern

The Tars jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first and never looked back


WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 12, 2023) – The sixth-ranked Rollins men's lacrosse team had no trouble with 16th-ranked Florida Southern on Wednesday night, handing the visiting Mocs a 14-6 loss. The win puts the Tars at 10-1 on the year and 4-0 in conference play, while FSC falls to 10-4 overall, 3-2 in SSC games.
 
Mikey Berkman led all players with six points on five goals and an assist, while Grant Hansen tallied two goals and two assists and William Metz scored three goals. Benjamin Kopen and Justin White each caused a game-high three turnovers, with Kopen adding a goal and White adding three ground balls and an assist. Lake Baker was 15-for-18 in faceoffs with a game-high six ground balls, while Justin Isenhour tied him with a game-high six ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers and an assist.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • Florida Southern opened the scoring, but Berkman answered 34 seconds later to tie the game at one.
  • A minute and 50 seconds later Berkman scored again, and 1:24 after that it was Berkman for the third time, putting Rollins up 3-1.
  • William Metz scored next before Berkman poured in his fourth of the quarter, making it a 5-1 game with 3:52 to play in the first.
  • With 1:24 to go, Kopen caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball, and raced downfield to score his first collegiate goal, giving Rollins a 6-1 lead after one period.
Second Quarter
  • FSC scored first in the second, but William Metz and Harrison Key netted the next two goals to make it an 8-2 contest.
  • Rollins got one last goal in the half as Connor Thornton scored from past midfield as the Mocs were running a 10-man ride, giving Thornton his first career goal and lifting the lead to 9-2 at the break.
Third Quarter
  • Florida Southern scored 51 seconds into the second half, but Hansen responded 39 seconds later to make it 10-3.
  • After a pair of FSC goals, Jack Johnstone found the net with 1:36 on the clock, giving Rollins a comfortable 11-5 margin heading to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
  • Hansen and Berkman each scored in the opening minutes of the fourth, with William Metz completing his hat trick at the 5:39 mark to make it 14-5.
  • The Mocs got the last goal of the game, accounting for the 14-6 final score.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will host Saint Leo on Saturday, April 15th, in the final regular season home game of the season. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, with Rollins set to honor its senior class shortly after the game.
