DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 14, 2023) – The Rollins volleyball team fell in a thrilling five-set match on Tuesday night at Embry-Riddle, with the Eagles taking it 25-21, 15-25, 19-25, 28-26, 18-16. The Tars now stand at 14-15 on the year, 6-12 in SSC play, while ERAU goes to 22-7 overall, 13-5 in conference matches.
Lana Gerard led all players with 20 kills and added 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season, while
Jadyn Troutman put down 17 kills to go along with a match-high seven blocks and five digs.
Makayla Moran tallied 12 kills and four blocks while hitting .632 and
Emily Diaz totaled 11 kills, giving Rollins four players with double-digit kills.
Adriana Lopez collected a match-leading 20 digs and added five assists and a match-best four service aces, while
Natalie Horsley dished out a match-high 58 assists in addition to 16 digs, four kills, and three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- The first set was close throughout, with Embry-Riddle using a 5-0 burst to take the lead for the final time and go up 19-15.
- The Tars got back within two points on two separate occasions, but the Eagles kept them at bay and won the set, 25-21.
Set Two
- Rollins took control of the second set with a 12-2 burst that gave the visitors a commanding 16-7 advantage.
- Embry-Riddle had no answer as the Tars continued to push, eventually winning the frame by a score of 25-15.
Set Three
- The third set saw Rollins jump out to a 7-4 lead and then use a 13-3 spurt to build the lead to double figures at 21-11.
- ERAU scored eight of the next 10 points, but the Tars shut down the comeback attempt by winning the next two points to seal it at 25-19.
Set Four
- Set four was back-and-forth throughout, with Rollins scoring three straight points late to turn a 24-22 deficit into a 25-24 lead and earn match point.
- Embry-Riddle responded with two straight points to go up 26-25, and after a Moran kill tied things up, the Eagles got the next two points as well, giving ERAU a 28-26 win and sending the match to set five.
Set Four
- Embry-Riddle scored the first three points of the fifth frame, but a 5-1 run by the Tars gave them an 8-7 lead at the changeover.
- The two teams traded sideouts for the next 11 points, leading to a 13-13 tie, before ERAU was the first to break the string with a point on serve, giving the Eagles match point at 14-13.
- Moran stepped up with a big kill and Diaz followed that up with another huge kill, turning the tides and putting Rollins in the driver's seat with match point of their own at 15-14.
- An ERAU kill kept things going, but Diaz replied with another kill to make it 16-15, giving the Tars their second match point.
- Embry-Riddle had one last answer, and the Eagles were able to come up with three consecutive points to close it out, winning the set, 18-16, to steal the match, three sets to two.
