Tars Fall in Five to Florida Southern

Rollins rallied from down 0-2 in the match, but the comeback bid came up short

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Oct. 6, 2023) – The Rollins volleyball team made a valiant comeback after falling behind two sets to none, but ultimately came up short in a 3-2 (29-27, 25-16, 24-26, 19-25, 15-10) defeat to Florida Southern. The Tars drop to 8-7 on the year, 3-4 in SSC play, while the Mocs go to 9-5 overall, 4-4 in conference matches.
 
Lana Gerard put down a match-leading 22 kills to go along with eight digs and two service aces, while Jadyn Troutman chipped in with 17 kills and four blocks. Emily Diaz added 12 kills and Emma Begley had 10 kills, five digs, and four blocks. Natalie Horsley led all players with 57 assists and Adriana Lopez picked up a match-high 23 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • A 6-0 run by the Tars put them in front, 15-12, midway through the opening set.
  • FSC came back, going on a 4-0 spurt to take a 23-21 lead late.
  • Rollins rallied, tying things at 24 on a Gerard ace.
  • After going back and forth, a Troutman kill gave the Blue and Gold set point at 27-26.
  • Florida Southern responded, scoring three straight points to steal the set, 29-27.
Set Two
  • Set two saw the Mocs jump out to an 8-4 lead early.
  • The advantage grew to eight points at 17-9, and FSC cruised to a 25-16 win to go up 2-0 in the match.
Set Three
  • The third set saw the Tars use a 10-4 rally to go up 13-10, which would prove to be a lead they would never surrender.
  • Florida Southern kept it close, and a 4-0 burst by the visitors brought them level at 23-23.
  • After trading sideouts, Diaz clinched the set with a block followed by a kill, securing a 26-24 win to keep the Tars in it and send the match to a fourth set.
Set Four
  • Rollins started strong in the fourth set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead early.
  • After FSC briefly took the lead back, the Blue and Gold went on a 10-3 spurt that gave the home team a commanding 22-16 advantage.
  • The Mocs scored the next three points, but the Tars returned the favor, finishing the set with three straight points, including two kills and a block from Gerard, to win the frame, 25-19.
Set Five
  • Florida Southern used a 4-0 run to go up 6-3 in the fifth, giving the Mocs a comfortable lead in the shortened fifth set.
  • The Tars didn't give up, eventually getting to within a point at 9-8 on a block by Troutman and Robinson Repass.
  • FSC responded by winning the next two points to regain momentum, and the visitors closed out the match on a 6-2 run to win the fifth set, 15-10.
