WINTER PARK, Fla. (Oct. 27, 2023) – The Rollins volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Eckerd on Friday night, falling 15-25, 32-30, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12. The Tritons improve to 19-3 overall and 9-3 in conference, while the Tars drop to 13-10, 5-7 in SSC play.
Lana Gerard had a team-high 18 kills and added 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, while
Jadyn Troutman added 16 kills and nine blocks (four solo).
Emily Diaz also notched a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, and
Emma Begley tallied 10 kills, six blocks, four digs, and three service aces.
Natalie Horsley led all players with 56 assists and recorded 15 digs, five kills, and three blocks, while
Adriana Lopez (18 digs) and
Jenna Garza (12 digs) each reached double-figures in digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- Rollins started strong, running out to a 10-3 lead early in the opening set.
- The Tritons were only able to get as close as four points, and the Tars rattled off the final six points of the frame to win it, 25-15.
Set Two
- Set two was by far the most competitive of the night, with the two sides staying within three points nearly the entire way.
- Eckerd pulled out to its largest lead at 22-18, but a kill from Gerard sparked a 5-0 burst that lifted Rollins to the lead, 23-22.
- The Tritons answered back with two straight points, but a Gerard kill kept things going at 24-24.
- Rollins fought off two more set points, and the Tritons themselves also had to fend off four set points for the Tars.
- Eventually, EC strung together three consecutive points to close out the frame, winning it by a score of 32-30.
Set Three
- The third set saw the Blue and Gold immediately grab the momentum, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage.
- Eckerd responded by winning 10 of the next 11 points to take a 12-8 lead.
- Rollins quickly returned the favor, going on an 8-1 spurt to take a 16-13 lead, only to see the Tritons win seven of the following eight points to retake the lead, 20-17.
- The Tars got back within a point at 22-21, but EC scored the next three to clinch the set, 25-21.
Set Four
- Rollins again got off to a strong start in the fourth, holding an early 11-4 edge.
- The lead remained comfortable until a 4-0 rally for the Tritons cut the deficit to 19-16.
- The Tars were able to steady themselves, eventually winning the set, 25-19, to tie the match at two sets apiece.
Set Five
- The two sides traded sideouts for the first seven points of the fifth set until a kill by Diaz gave Rollins a 5-3 lead.
- Eckerd came back to win the next seven points, earning a 10-5 lead.
- The Tars closed the gap to just two at 12-10, but couldn't win a point on serve the rest of the way, as the Tritons sided out to win the set, 15-12, giving them a 3-2 victory in the match.
