WINTER PARK, Fla. (Sept. 10, 2022) – The Rollins sailing team kicked off the 2022-23 season on Saturday, hosting the SAISA South Fall Tournament on the waters of Lake Virginia. The Tars finished sixth on the day, and had their moments led by
Katherine Hamner and
Margaret Burnham, who emerged to hold the lead in parts of two races.
The Tars' lineup for the day included
Carly Orhan,
Angelina Khourisader,
Connor Teague,
Anjella Klaiber, Hamner, Burnham, Max Klaasen,
Zi Burns,
Emily Threeton, and
Isabella Botelho.
Rollins entered two teams in the competition, earning sixth and ninth place, respectively. The sixth-place team ended the day with the A boat scoring 33 points and the B boat tallying 36 points, while the ninth-place team scored 45 points with its A boat and 43 points with its B boat. On the day, the Tars collected 10 top-five finishes, with the best result being a third-place finish for the top team's A boat in the fifth race of the day.
USF came out on top in this event, while Embry-Riddle won qualification for the conference's fall championship in October.
No one who sailed on the day could help but remark about the amazing weather. For two weeks leading up to the event, the Tars sailing team had experienced nothing better than challenging conditions that cut practices short and sent the team toward cover.
But Saturday morning broke with solid breezes that only improved throughout the day, and with fair skies that held until all boats were put away and safely in their bunks.
It was a great start to the Tars' sailing season, which continues next weekend on the waters of Tampa Bay as Rollins travels southwest for a divisional competition hosted by rival USF on Saturday, Sept. 17.
