WINTER PARK, Fla. (May 6, 2022) – The Rollins baseball team earned a doubleheader split against second-ranked Tampa on Friday, dropping the first game, 9-6, before walking off with a 2-1 win in the nightcap. With the results, Rollins now stands at 35-14 on the year, 18-11 in conference, while the Spartans are 37-9 overall, 21-5 in SSC play.
Game 1 – No. 2 Tampa 9, Rollins 6
Chase Achuff went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in the opener, while
Jeslyn Whitehead was 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
Cameron Meehan finished 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, and a run scored, and
Parker Smith was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run.
Justin Alintoff (5-5) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings, walking one and striking out two.
Drew Ehrhard went 2-for-5 with a walk, two runs scored, and two RBIs for Tampa, while Jamarcus Lyons was 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
Haden Erbe (9-1) got the win, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings, walking two and striking out four. Braydon Nelson earned his 10th save with a perfect inning of relief, picking up one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Achuff singled with one out, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout.
- Jeslyn Whitehead then singled up the middle to score Achuff with the game's first run.
Third Inning
- The Spartans scored a pair of two-out runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
- Joey Rubin led off the bottom of the third with a double, and he moved to third when Achuff reached on an error.
- Two batters later, Jeslyn Whitehead knocked in Rubin with an RBI groundout to tie the game at two.
Sixth Inning
- J.D. Urso singled home Dan Sullivan with one out in the sixth to put Tampa back on top, 3-2.
Seventh Inning
- The Spartans took advantage of four walks in the seventh to score three runs, extending their lead to 6-2.
Eighth Inning
- Tampa scored two more runs in the eighth without the benefit of a hit, using four walks and a hit-by-pitch to push the lead to 8-2.
- Rollins answered with an RBI groundout from Jeslyn Whitehead and a two-run home from Smith to cut the deficit to 8-5.
Ninth Inning
- UT tacked on another run in the ninth to make it 9-5.
- Meehan led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and scored on Jared Herron's RBI single, but that was the extent of the damage the Tars could do as they fell by a final score of 9-6.
Game 2 – Rollins 2, No. 2 Tampa 1
Achuff went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks in the second game, while Meehan and
Jeslyn Whitehead were each 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Jaylyn Whitehead started for the Tars, allowing one unearned run on five hits in seven innings, walking four and striking out six.
Tate Stone-Frisina (7-1) got the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings, giving up two hits while collecting one strikeout.
Sullivan was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Josh Rulli was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Spartans.
Alex Canney started for Tampa, tossing six scoreless innings, surrendering two hits and a walk while striking out five. Braden Forsyth (1-2) took the loss, giving up an unearned run on one hit in 0.2 innings of relief, walking one and striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
- Tampa scored its lone run of the game in the third on a two-out single from Sullivan, scoring Rulli, who had reached on an error to open the inning.
Eighth Inning
- The Tars finally broke through in the eighth to tie the game.
- Meehan led off with a single and two batters later, Herron delivered a pinch-hit single, pushing Meehan to third.
- Meehan was then able to score on a wild pitch, knotting the game at a run apiece.
Ninth Inning
- Jeslyn Whitehead got the ninth inning started with an infield single.
- Nick Santucci was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second.
- Smith then lifted a fly ball into right-center field, where the right fielder dropped it, loading the bases.
- With the Spartans playing with five infielders, Meehan hit a chopper to third base, but the third baseman sailed his throw home over the catcher, allowing Whitehead to score the walk-off winning run.

The Tars and Spartans will wrap up this three-game series tomorrow with a Saturday matinee starting at 3 p.m. Prior to the game, the Tars will hold a ceremony to honor the 2022 senior class.
