WINTER PARK, Fla. (May 7, 2022) – The Rollins baseball team dropped a 5-3 contest to No. 2 Tampa on Saturday in the regular season finale for the Tars. The loss drops Rollins to 35-15 on the year, 18-12 in conference play, while the Spartans improve to 38-9, 22-5 in SSC games.
Ryan Coleman went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while
Parker Smith was 2-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch.
Jared Herron went 1-for-4 with an RBI and
Jeslyn Whitehead and
Nick Santucci each finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Austin Long (3-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings, striking out two and walking none. Steve Swift tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one walk in the scoreless relief outing.
Anthony Nunez was 2-for-3 with a walk, a home run, and three RBIs for the Spartans, while Jordan Lala was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Michael Paul (8-2) got the win, giving up two runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work, walking one and striking out two. Braydon Nelson earned his 11th save, allowing one unearned run over the final 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Second Inning
- The Spartans took the lead on a two-out, two-run single off the bat on Nunez in the top of the second.
- Jeslyn Whitehead and Santucci opened the bottom of the second with consecutive singles, and both men moved up 90 feet when Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out.
- Coleman then lifted a fly ball down the right field line that the right fielder never could find, which allowed the ball to drop safely for a two-run double, scoring Whitehead and Santucci to tie the game at two.
Third Inning
- Dan Sullivan put Tampa back in front with a sacrifice fly in the third to score Lala, making it a 3-2 game.
Seventh Inning
- Nunez hit a one-out solo home run in the seventh to make it 4-2 Spartans.
- Two batters later, Lala singled home Jose Cadenas to build the lead to 5-2.
- Herron knocked in Joey Rubin with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Ninth Inning
- Nelson, who had come on with two outs in the sixth, retired the last seven men he faced, including a pair of called third strikes in the bottom the ninth, securing the 5-3 victory for Tampa.
