SAINT LEO, Fla. (May 19, 2022) – The 20th-ranked and third-seeded Rollins baseball team pounded out 12 hits and got eight solid innings from
Jaylyn Whitehead to take down sixth-seeded Delta State, 7-5, on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA South 2 Region Tournament. The victory moves the Tars to 36-15 on the year, while the Statesmen fall to 32-16.
Chase Achuff finished 3-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, an RBI, and two runs scored, while
Adams Torres was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Ryan Coleman and
Cameron Meehan each hit home runs, while
Joey Rubin went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
Jaylyn Whitehead (9-2) earned the win, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in eight innings of work, walking three and striking out six.
Austin Long notched his seventh save of the season with a clean ninth inning.
Dalton Cummins went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and an RBI for Delta State, while Hayden White was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Harrison Haley (10-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 6.1 innings, walking one and striking out none.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
- Delta State got on the board first, scoring on a double play in the top of the first inning.
- The Tars quickly answered, with Torres doubling home Achuff to tie things up in the bottom half of the inning.
Second Inning
- The Statesmen retook the lead, scoring twice in the second to go up 3-1.
- Once again, Rollins responded in its half of the inning, quickly tying things up thanks to back-to-back solo home runs from Coleman and Meehan.
- Rubin then sparked a two-out rally with a base hit, scoring the Tars' fourth run on an Achuff double.
- Torres followed that with another double, plating Achuff to make it 5-3 Tars.
Third Inning
- DSU scored two times in the third on RBI singles, bringing the score to a level 5-5 in the third.
Fourth Inning
- A Torres sacrifice fly scored Jared Herron in the fourth, pushing Rollins back in front, 6-5.
Seventh Inning
- Meehan added an insurance run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly that scored Nick Santucci, increasing the lead to 7-5.
Ninth Inning
- Long came on for the ninth and retired all three batters he faced to nail down the 7-5 victory.

The Tars will face Lee tomorrow evening in the winners' bracket championship game. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
