No. 9 Tars Clip No. 12 Eagles with Late Goal

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 6, 2022) – The No. 9 Tars celebrated Fox Day with a trip to Daytona Beach, for a top-15 women's lacrosse showdown against No. 12 Embry-Riddle.  Rollins took the contest, 11-10, to improve to 11-0 on the year, and 2-0 in Sunshine State Conference action.  The Tars now sit as the last unbeaten team in the South Region.  The Eagles fall to 11-1 on the year, and 1-1 in conference action.
 
Caroline Gastonguay continued her stellar play, tallying a game high six points on four goals and a pair of assists.  Liz Fahey and Charlotte Gastonguay each scored twice, while Abigail Cawley dished out three helpers.  Isabella Cecchi collected a team high three draw controls and Bridget Cawley caused a turnover and picked up three groundballs defensively.  Rachel Schlesinger made four saves, playing the full 60 minutes between the pipes.
 
Sallie Squire found the back of the net a game high five times for the Eagles.  Elizabeth Ninesling added a hat trick for Embry-Riddle while also winning a game high five draw controls.  A pair of Eagles registered a team high two assists each.  Aubrey Fixen made six saves in cage for Embry-Riddle.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

• The teams traded goals throughout the first 15 minutes, setting the stage for the back and forth game.
• The Eagles struck early finding the back of the net just 30 second into the game.  Rollins would respond minutes later when Claire Reist equalized.
• Squires first gave Embry-Riddle a 2-1 lead, but that was neutralized by Liz Fahey's first just 30 seconds later.
• The Eagles would cap the quarter with a goal with 5:30 on the clock, as the hosts took a one goal lead into the first break.

Second Quarter

• The back and forth affair continued with the Tars drawing level with Caroline Gastonguay's first.
• The Eagles pulled back in front with Squire's third, but Caroline Gastonguay would pull the teams level again at 4-4.
• Squire netted her fourth, as the Eagles reclaimed the lead, but Charlotte Gastonguay brought the team back on level terms in the final minute of the first half, sending the teams to the locker room knotted at 5-5.

Third Quarter

• Caroline Gastonguay scored off an assist from Madison McGarry to give Rollins their first lead of the day, but it was short lived, as the Eagles tied the game with an extra woman goal less than a minute later.
• The Tars were then able to go on run, and build a 9-6 lead.
• Abigail DeGroat started the stretch, beating the goalie off an assist from Caroline Bailey.
• Caroline Gastonguay and Abigail Cawley combined for the Tars next two scores, with Cawley feeding Gastongauy to make it 8-6, and Gastonguay returning the favor, as Cawley put Rollins up 9-6 at the end of three quarters.

Fourth Quarter

• The Eagles again responded, opening the fourth quarter with three straight goals of their own to pull level at 9-9.
• Caroline Gastonguay found Liz Fahey for her second goal, a extra woman tally, to give the Tars a 10-9 advantage.  But Embry-Riddle would equalize with Squire's fifth, and the teams entered the home stretch locked at 10-10
• After a defensive stand on an Eagle fast break, Rollins gained possession with just over a minute left and called a timeout to draw up a play.
• Abigail Cawley collected the ball as the Tars rotated around the outside of the arc.  The junior then saw a cutting Charlotte Gastonguay and put a pass right on her stick.  The freshman caught the ball and quickly fired a shot low to beat the Eagle keeper for the game winner.
• Taylor Kienle won the Tars the ensuing draw control which allowed them to run out the clock and stay perfect on the season.

The Tars continue SSC play with another contest against top ranked opposition; Rollins will host No. 5 Florida Southern at Barker Family Stadium on Saturday, April 9, at 1 p.m.
