No. 9 Tars Upset No. 5 Mocs in Key SSC Match Up

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 9, 2022) – Rollins picked up a signature win, defeating No. 5 Florida Southern, 16-12, on a breezy day at Cahall Sandspur Field.  The No. 9 Tars stay unbeaten, and improve to 12-0 on the year, and 3-0 in Sunshine State Conference play.  The Mocs fall to 8-2 overall, and 1-1 against conference opposition.
 
Caroline Gastonguay starred for the Tars, eaning a game high seven points, on four goals and three assists.  Liz Fahey added five points, with four goals of her own, and one helper.  Charlotte Gastonguay also found the back of the net four times.  Abigail Cawley net a hat trick and dished out a pair of assists.  Bridget Cawley caused a pair of turnovers, while Abigail DeGroat help Rollins take possession with eight draw controls.  Rachel Schlesinger made seven saves in goals.
 
Madison Tare scored four times for the Mocs.  Lizzy Lynch added a hat trick for Florida Southern.  Hailey Daleo led the team with two assists, while adding one goal for three points.  Patricia Werker made ten saves, playing the full 60 minutes between the pipes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

• Daleo started the game with a goal for the Mocs, but Liz Fahey responded, as the teams battled back and forth early.
• Brenna Smith gave Florida Southern the lead back, but Rollins then went on a three goal run to grab the lead.  Charlotte Gastonguay started the run with a back handed goal just before the shot clock expired.  Goals from Abigail Cawley and Caroline Gastonguay completed the run to give Rollins a 4-2 lead.
• Tare's first ended the stretch, but another goal from Caroline Gastonguay found the back of the net before the period ended, to make the score 5-3.

Second Quarter

• The Mocs came out aggressive in the second quarter, scoring four straight goals over the opening five minutes.
• After a long scoreless spell Caroline Gastonguay finally registered Rollins only point of the quarter, sending the teams to halftime with the score 7-6.

Third Quarter

• Rollins went on a three goal streak to regain the lead out of the half.
• Charlotte Gastonguay found the back of the net off a Liz Fahey assist to open the scoring.  Fahey then gave the Tars the lead back at 8-7, before Charlotte Gastonguay scored again to increase the Tars lead to two.
• The Mocs would score to pull back within one, but Rollins rejected their comeback with goals from Caroline Gastonguay and Abigail Cawley, to make the score 11-8 heading into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter

• Fahey tallied early in the fourth, ballooning Rollins lead to four.
• The Mocs scored twice, capitalizing on a Rollins penalty, to pull back within two, at 12-10.
• Abigail Cawley registered her hat trick off an assist from Caroline Gastonguay to bring the Tars' advantage back to three.
• The Mocs again refused to go quietly, with Tare scoring again to make the score 13-11 with 8:27 on the clock.
• The Tars defense locked down late, while Fahey and Charlotte Gastonguay each scored again, as Rollins took a 15-11 lead with four minutes left.
• Florida Southern managed one more goal, but the Tars controlled possession down the stretch, before Abigail DeGroat capped the contest with a late goal, icing the game away.

The Tars will travel to Lynn on Wednesday, April 13, to take on the Fighting Knights.  Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
