No. 19 Baseball Falls to Sharks in Series Opener

The Tars scratched across a run in the ninth, but the comeback bid fell short

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 30, 2022) – After weather delayed the series opener between No. 19 Rollins and Nova Southeastern by 24 hours, the Tars came up short, falling to the Sharks 4-3. The loss drops the Tars to 32-13 on the season, 15-10 in conference, while NSU goes to 32-12 overall, 15-10 in SSC games.

Chase Achuff went 1-for-4 with a walk and a two-run home run, while Adams Torres was 2-for-5 with a stolen base. Jaylyn Whitehead (8-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits in five innings, walking two and striking out five.

Adam Smith was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Sharks, while Tyler Epstein finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Jeremy Cook (7-0) got the win, giving up two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings, striking out seven against no walks. Michael Dillon earned his 12th save, surrendering an unearned run on two hits in the ninth, walking one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
  • Joey Rubin singled with two outs in the third, which allowed Achuff to deliver a two-out, two-run home run to left to put the Tars up 2-0.

  • The Sharks responded, using three hits in the bottom half of the inning to score twice to tie it up.
  • NSU had runners at second and third with one out when a lightning delay force Jaylyn Whitehead to wait close to an hour before resuming the inning, at which point a squeeze bunt and a sacrifice fly helped the Sharks plate their two runs.
Fifth Inning
  • Nova Southeastern took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to go up 3-2.
Seventh Inning
  • The Sharks scored their fourth run in the seventh, but Spencer Mangum was able to work his way out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam without allowing any further damage.
Ninth Inning
  • Torres connected for a two-out single in the ninth, and a throwing error allowed Timothy Mira to score to make it a one-run game.
  • The Tars couldn't push across the tying run as Dillon locked up the save by stranding runners on second and third.
