No. 19 Tars Sweep Doubleheader, Claim Series Win at Nova Southeastern

Rollins came from behind in both games to pick up two important wins on Sunday


FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (May 1, 2022) – The 19th-ranked Rollins baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader at Nova Southeastern on Saturday, winning the series over the Sharks, two games to one. The Tars won both games by identical 7-6 scores, improving to 34-13 overall, 17-10 in conference, while the Sharks fell to 32-14, 15-12 in SSC games.
 
Game 1 – No. 19 Rollins 7, Nova Southeastern 6

Chase Achuff went 4-for-5 with a stolen base, an RBI, and two runs scored, while Parker Smith was 3-for-5 with a stolen base and two RBIs. Joey Rubin drew a pair of walks and scored twice, while Cameron Meehan was 1-for-4 with a walk and a solo home run.
 
Nick Berger started for the Tars, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks in two innings. Tate Stone-Frisina (6-1) got the win, allowing two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of relief, striking out five while issuing no free passes. Austin Long got his sixth save of the season, getting the final five outs while giving up just one hit and collecting one strikeout.
 
Adan Fernandez was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs for the Sharks, while Gabriel Rivera went 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
 
Carlos Rey pitched the first four innings for NSU, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits, walking four and striking out six. Matt Kavanaugh (3-4) took the loss, surrendering three runs (one earned) on two hits in 3.1 innings, striking out six against no walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Inning
  • The Tars got on the board first on a two-out, two run single from Smith in the first inning, taking an early 2-0 lead.
Second Inning
  • Rollins doubled its lead in the second when Jared Herron reached on a throwing error that allowed two runs to score, pushing the lead to 4-0.
     
  • The Sharks got those runs back in the bottom of the second, scoring twice to cut the lead to 4-2.
Third Inning
  • A two-run home run from Adan Fernandez in the third knotted things up at 4-4.
Fourth Inning
  • NSU took a 5-4 lead on a two-out RBI single in the fourth from Duncan Pastore.
Eighth Inning
  • Meehan led off the eighth with a solo home run, tying the game at 5-5.
  • Later in the inning, Kyle Bullock scored on an error to put the Tars up, 6-5.
  • Achuff made it a 7-5 game with a two-out RBI single, scoring Timothy Mira.
     
  • Rivera hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 7-6 game.
Ninth Inning
  • Long made quick work of the Sharks in the ninth, setting them down in order to preserve the 7-6 win. 
 
Game 2 – No. 19 Rollins 7, Nova Southeastern 6

Bullock finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Smith was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Jeslyn Whitehead went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored, and Meehan was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
 
Long started the second game, giving up three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings, walking two. Steven Swift (2-0) got the win, allowing one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief, striking out three. Achuff came on to pitch the final two innings to earn his sixth save of the year, as he allowed just one hit and no runs while striking out two.
 
Adam Smith went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs for Nova Southeastern, while Rivera was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
Cooper Omans started, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings, walking one and striking out one. Stephen Schissler (0-3) took the loss, surrendering a run on two hits in 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fourth Inning
  • Herron got a rally started in the fourth with a one-out double and came home to score on Jeslyn Whitehead's RBI single to open the scoring.
  • Two batters later, Smith drove in Whitehead with a sacrifice fly, giving Rollins a 2-0 lead.
     
  • The Sharks got a run back in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a pair of walks and a one-out RBI single.
Fifth Inning
  • Achuff singled home Bullock with two outs in the fifth to make it 3-1.
     
  • NSU sent 10 batters to the plate in its half of the fifth, scoring five times to take a 6-3 lead.
Sixth Inning
  • Rollins wasted no time responding, scoring four times in the sixth to retake the lead.
  • Meehan singled in Smith and Jeslyn Whitehead to make it a 6-5 game.
  • Bullock then launched a two-run home run to put the Tars back in front, 7-6.
Ninth Inning
  • Achuff allowed just a two-out single in the ninth as he collected the save, nailing down the 6-5 win for the Tars.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will return home for the final three-game SSC series of the regular season next weekend against No. 2 Tampa. The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday, with the first game slated to start at 4 p.m.
